A Sleep Expert’s Guide to the Best Essential Oils for Restful Nights

With the UK sleep industry now valued at $1.5 billion, ¹, finding the most effective products to support better rest can feel overwhelming. Increasingly, however, people are turning back to simple, natural solutions. It’s no surprise, then, that searches for ‘essential oils for sleep’ have soared by more than 160% in just the past week2, as more of us look for gentle, accessible ways to improve our sleep.

Whether adding them to a relaxing nighttime bath, diffusing them in the bedroom, or creating a pillow spray, essential oils can be a simple and effective way to enhance bedtime routines. With this in mind, Rex Isap, CEO of Happy Beds, is sharing his expert recommendations for the best essential oils for sleep.

1. Lavender

“Lavender is probably the most famous essential oil for sleep, and for good reason. Its calming scent has been shown to slow down the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and improve sleep quality. Some studies even suggest it increases deep, restorative sleep stages, which are crucial for feeling refreshed in the morning. Diffusing lavender in your bedroom or placing a few drops on your pillow can signal to your brain that it’s time to wind down. The key is consistency, as the brain starts associating that familiar floral aroma with relaxation, making it easier to drift off naturally.”

2. Peppermint

“Peppermint smells amazing and can boost alertness and focus, but when it comes to sleep, it’s actually more stimulating than relaxing. So, while the scent of peppermint isn’t likely to help you drift off, peppermint can still support sleep in other ways. Caffeine-free peppermint tea, for example, has natural muscle-relaxing properties thanks to its menthol content. This helps reduce tension and stress, making it easier to enjoy a more restful night’s sleep.

“Peppermint tea also comes to the rescue if you’re feeling bloated or have mild digestive discomfort before bed. Its carminative compounds help gases move more freely through the digestive system, relieving discomfort and allowing your body to fully relax.”.

3. Vanilla

“Vanilla is often associated with comfort and coziness, and this isn’t just in your imagination. Its sweet, warm aroma has been found to reduce stress and create a soothing environment. Think of it as a gentle nudge for your nervous system, calming the mind, lowering cortisol levels, and signalling that it’s time to relax.”

4. Chamomile

“Chamomile is more than just a bedtime tea, the essential oil has a long history of anxiety reducing qualities. Clinical studies show chamomile can help improve sleep quality, especially for people dealing with stress or mild insomnia. Its subtle, apple-like scent interacts with the olfactory system, encouraging your brain to slow down and prepare for rest. It’s ideal for those quiet, pre-sleep moments.”

5. Jasmine

“Jasmine isn’t just a beautiful scent,  it’s powerful as a sleep aid. Research has found that inhaling jasmine can lower anxiety levels and improve sleep quality, sometimes even matching the effects of mild pharmaceutical sleep aids. Its floral sweetness makes it particularly effective for emotional relaxation, making it ideal for anyone who finds floral scents more comforting than herbal or woody ones. Diffuse it in the bedroom, or add a drop to a nighttime bath to encourage tranquillity.”

6. Cedarwood

“Cedarwood essential oil brings a deeply grounding aroma that promotes relaxation and eases tension. Its woody scent has sedative properties that can help calm the mind and reduce stress. For those who find floral or sweet aromas too stimulating, cedarwood is an excellent alternative. It works beautifully in combination with lavender or chamomile to create a delightful, sleep-friendly aroma.”

7. Sandalwood

“Sandalwood has a rich, earthy scent that has been used for centuries in meditation and sleep rituals. In fact, research shows it can help reduce anxiety and support non-REM (deep) sleep, which is critical for full mental and physical restoration. Pair it with lighter floral oils like lavender or jasmine to create a balanced, calming bedtime environment. Its long-lasting aroma lingers gently, signalling to your brain that it’s time to let go of the day’s stress.”
