Expert Reveals How to Save on Home Insurance in 2026

“As we head towards the end of the year, many of us will be feeling the increased financial pressure that goes hand-in-hand with the festive season. But what if there was a way homeowners could save on their home insurance to ease the load in 2026?

December tends to be a quieter month for home insurance sales, but that could mean it’s an opportunity to secure a good price before the new year.

“Here are a few tips focusing on what you can do in December to potentially make savings on your home insurance policy.

Review your current policy terms

“Insurers may offer you better rates if you are proactive about renewing your policy, making them more likely to view you as a responsible homeowner. The best time to look at this is approximately four weeks before it’s due for renewal – so if your policy is up for renewal in January or early February, this could be one to look into over the festive season.

It’s worth shopping around by checking at least two different price comparison websites, but bear in mind that not all insurers are on them. It’s also sensible to compare what’s actually covered, and not just look at the price.

Regularly reviewing your policy and knowing when it’s about to end means you have time to shop around.

Beware of hidden costs and fees

“While a cheap price for your insurance might sound appealing, if it sounds too good to be true, maybe it is. Always check that there are no additional fees or costs hidden somewhere in the finer details of the policy and that the cover meets your needs.

“Spending a bit of time reading the fine print could save you money in the long run and ensures that you’re buying a policy that is suitable for you and your property.

Ensure your home is adequately insured

Whatever policy you have, it’s important to check it’s providing adequate coverage for your home. There may be add-ons you’re willing to forgo that were included in last year’s policy that you no longer feel you need, or you may have had a change in circumstance, which means you require a different type of coverage, for example if you’re planning to renovaterenting out your property, or leaving it unoccupied for more than 30 days.

“Not all insurance providers will have adequate policies for specialist requirements. For example, if you have particularly high-value items in your home, check whether the policy includes extra contents insurance to ensure adequate cover.

“It’s also important to pre-empt your insurance policy renewal by having any new or updated contents in your home valued. This will help you get the most accurate quote and avoid any issues if you need to claim later.

Remember to always be vigilant, read all the fine print, and then decide if the offer in front of you is, indeed, a good December deal.”
