Unlocking The Secret To Healthy Hair: Why Scalp Care Matters

Why Scalp Care Matters

When it comes to achieving luscious, healthy locks, many people focus solely on hair care products and treatments. However, they often overlook the importance of nourishing the scalp, which is the foundation for strong and vibrant hair growth. The scalp plays a vital role in maintaining optimal scalp health and promoting hair growth. Proper nourishment of the scalp is essential because it provides the necessary environment for hair follicles to thrive.

A well-nourished scalp ensures that hair follicles receive adequate nutrients, oxygen, and moisture, promoting their growth and strength. On the other hand, neglecting scalp care can lead to issues like dryness, flakiness, itchiness, or excess oil production. One effective way to nourish your scalp is through regular massaging. Massaging not only improves blood circulation but also helps distribute natural oils produced by your scalp evenly throughout your hair strands.

Additionally, using natural oils such as coconut oil or argan oil can provide deep hydration and essential nutrients directly to the roots. Incorporating a balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, E, biotin, zinc, and iron also contributes to a healthy scalp.

DID YOU KNOW…

  1. The sun damages coloured hair: Over time UV can be very drying and may eventually denature the keratin in the hair, causing it to be more prone to breakage.  It can also of course negatively affect the hair colour (particularly of lightened hair), making it appear brassier.  Using a product such as Daily Damage Defence, can give the scalp and hair protection from the sun, especially if it is bleached or coloured.
  2. Hair Loss can be genetic: Firstly, there are many types of hair loss, but Hair thinning is caused by ‘androgenic thinning’ and most known as male or female pattern hair loss. Androgenic thinning is related, as the name implies, to androgens (male hormones) and it is genetically predetermined, which is why some will be more prone to hair loss than others.
  3. Washing your hair frequently is important for scalp health: Good scalp hygiene is essential to hair growth – after all, your scalp is your hair’s support system. Your scalp is skin and needs similar care to the skin on your face – and for scalp health, daily cleansing is best. Try to shampoo frequently, at least every other day if possible. A healthy scalp is vital to hair growth – and a healthy scalp is a clean scalp.
  4. Nutrition is key: The impact that nutrition has on hair growth should not be underestimated. As hair is non- essential tissue, and hair cells are the second fastest growing cells your body makes, its nutritional requirements are very high. Eating a healthy, balanced, and varied diet is key!
  5. The water type affects the hair:   Factors such as washing with hard water can leave deposits on the hair making it appear dull, and overuse of products containing a lot of silicones can leave the hair limp and lacklustre.   Therefore, including a monthly clarifying treatment (for example Philip Kingsley Vitamin C Jelly) into your routine can be a helpful treat for your hair and scalp.
  6. Fine hair is greasier: Every hair follicle on your head has an oil gland that produces sebum. Those with finer textured hair, tend to have a more hairs per cm on their head that those with thicker, coarser or coiled hair textures and therefore more oil glands producing more sebum.
  7. Hair CANNOT be trained: You cannot train your hair to be less greasy by washing it less! But, there are things you can do to help such as steering away from fatty, oily or sugary foods and using topical scalp toners, such as the Flaky/Itchy scalp one to balance the scalp and reduce sebum production.
