How to Keep Peonies Fresh for Longer and Make Them Bloom Beautifully
There are few flowers as eagerly anticipated as peonies.
With their oversized ruffled petals, delicate fragrance and unmistakably luxurious look, they have become one of the most-loved blooms of late spring. But part of their charm is also their frustration — peony season is famously short.
Blooming from late April until around mid-June, these seasonal favourites are only around for a matter of weeks, which is why many flower lovers want to make every bouquet count.
The good news? According to flower expert David Denyer of Eflorist, a few simple habits can help peonies bloom beautifully and stay fresher for longer.
Why Peonies Are So Popular
Peonies have become a staple of stylish homes, elegant tablescapes and seasonal gifting. Their soft colours, statement petals and romantic feel make them a natural choice for kitchens, dining rooms and spring celebrations.
David explains:

“Peonies are one of spring’s most beloved flowers. Renowned for their lush blooms and delightful fragrance, we know that people look forward to this time of year.”
And with such a short season, knowing how to care for them properly can make all the difference.
How to Make Peonies Open Faster
One of the most common frustrations with peonies is buying them in bud form and waiting days for them to fully open.
Thankfully, there is a quick trick.
Fill a vase with lukewarm water, then gently turn each peony upside down so the petals face downward. Carefully dip the bloom into the warm water for a moment, allowing the petals to absorb moisture.
A light swirl in the water can help, but be gentle to avoid bruising the petals.
After removing the flower, shake off excess droplets and place it back into fresh cool water. Within a few hours, the bloom should begin opening.
Change the Water Often
Fresh water is one of the easiest ways to keep flowers looking healthy.
Peonies do best when their water is changed every two to three days, though daily changes can extend their life even further.
Stale water quickly encourages bacteria, which can lead to drooping stems, cloudy water and petals fading sooner than they should.
Keep the vase around two-thirds full with cool fresh water.
Trim the Stems Properly
Every time you refresh the vase, trim the stems too.
Cut each stem at a 45-degree angle under running water. This prevents air bubbles from forming inside the stem, helping the flowers drink properly.
It also stops stems from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase, allowing better water flow.
Removing any leaves that sit below the waterline is equally important, as submerged leaves rot quickly and shorten the life of the bouquet.
Keep Them Cool
Peonies may look dramatic, but they prefer calm conditions.
Avoid placing them on sunny windowsills, near radiators or close to ovens and warm appliances.
Instead, choose a cool room with indirect sunlight and gentle airflow.
The cooler the environment, the slower the blooms age — helping you enjoy them for longer.
Support Full Blooms
Once fully open, peonies can become surprisingly heavy.
Their large flower heads often bend delicate stems, causing the arrangement to droop.
Using a taller vase gives stems more support, while floral tape around the bunch can help them stay upright and beautifully arranged.
The Secret to Enjoying Peony Season
Because peonies are only around for a few precious weeks, caring for them properly can turn a short-lived bouquet into over a week of stunning blooms.
A little trimming, cool water and smart placement can help you make the most of one of spring’s greatest luxuries.
