7 reasons why you could be denied entry to a country

denied entry to a country

Holiday-makers are being warned of all the reasons they could be denied entry to a country this summer.

Travel experts at StressFreeCarRental.com have revealed seven reasons why tourists could be denied entry to a country and possibly detained.

Entry requirements vary from country to country so it’s important that travellers familiarise themselves with the rules for their chosen destination.

Tourists can be refused entry to a country for many reasons including having no proof of onward travel and not having enough blank passport pages.

John Charnock, from StressFreeCarRental.com said: “Before people go on holiday it’s really important to make sure you have done everything to ensure you are eligible to enter the country.

“Of course most of us are aware of general rules like having the correct travel documents and visas but there are some requirements that people aren’t aware of like being able to provide proof of onward travel.

“The rules will vary from country to country so it’s worth spending some time researching what your chosen destination requires of you to allow you to enter.”

Seven reasons why you could be denied entry to a country:

  1. Damage to passport

A small tear or some water damage is enough for officials to detain you for questioning and class your passport as invalid. Your passport can be classed as invalid if your personal details are difficult to read or if any of the pages are stained from things such as ink and make up.

  1. Taking medicine abroad

Before travelling to your destination, you’ll want to check what medication is allowed there and what quantity is permitted. Some medicines that are purchased over the counter in the UK may be regulated or restricted in other countries.

Any medical equipment such as syringes will need to be in their original and labelled packaging. It’s also worth travelling with a copy of any prescriptions in case you need to show it to officials.

  1. Lack of vaccinations

Countries can deny you entry if you lack the necessary vaccinations to protect yourself from infections and diseases. Some places even require you to show proof of vaccination.

You may be at more risk if you are backpacking, visiting rural areas or staying in hostels. Speak to a doctor or travel clinic at least 8 weeks before your trip and see what vaccinations you require.

  1. No onward travel

Some countries and airlines require you to have proof of onward travel whether that’s a return ticket or a ticket to another destination. This is so that they can ensure you won’t be staying longer than you are allowed. Spontaneous travellers can try booking a refundable flight 24 hours before you set off on your journey or talk to a travel agent for advice.

  1. Not having enough blank passport pages

Each country has different rules on the amount of blank passport pages you need to travel. Most countries require one or two pages but some expect up to three. If you don’t have enough blank pages before your trip you will need to renew your passport.

  1. Insufficient funds

In some cases you may be asked to show proof that you have sufficient funds to visit your chosen destination. The amount required is different in each country. If you are staying with a friend or relative it is advised that you have your agreement in writing to show officials.

  1. Criminal record

A criminal record can prevent you from entering certain countries but the criteria for this varies. Before planning your trip, check for any restrictions in your chosen destination.
