British Families Reveal Their Dream Holiday Destinations for 2026

New data reveals the British public’s 5 dream family holiday destinations

As the year draws to a close, a growing number of Britons are already turning their attention to next summer’s getaway, seeking a morale-boosting escape to look forward to as the country heads into the depths of winter.

A recent survey conducted by global travel booking site Omio has revealed the dream family holiday destinations of Britons – many of which they can’t afford due to rising travel prices.

The data shows that while many families in the UK are still keen to travel overseas to create memories with their families, their dream destinations are unfortunately having to be put on hold as family holiday costs rise by 4.2% year-on-year[1].

Disney World, Florida, came out on top as the dream holiday destination

A quarter of respondents (25%) named Walt Disney World in Florida as their ultimate family holiday destination. Yet with trips for a family of four now averaging over £3,000, many say it’s firmly out of reach. Instead, nearly half of those surveyed (46%) expect to choose a UK staycation for their next family break, reflecting a clear shift towards more affordable options amid rising travel costs.

The Maldives emerged as the second most-desired family escape, securing 15% of the vote, followed by Dubai in third place at 12%. This preference for long-haul luxury may be linked to the growing importance of high-quality accommodation, as 45% of participants said that where they stay is the most important factor when booking a holiday.

Australia came in fourth place as the British public’s dream holiday destination (11%), followed by Japan, with 9% of participants claiming it to be their dream family getaway. It is interesting to note that Japan is becoming a popular family holiday destination, as visits to the country have almost doubled over the past decade, as more people want to get a taste of the food, culture and theme parks.

As holiday costs soar, more British families are having to sacrifice their dream destinations in favour of cheap flights and packages

Out of all of the participants surveyed, almost three-quarters (72%) agreed that they have to make sacrifices in their everyday lives to go on holiday. Respondents admitted to giving up things such as enjoying meals out and takeaways (62%), alongside treating themselves to new clothes and beauty products (49%).

Alongside this, more British families are having to sacrifice their dream holiday destinations to afford some type of getaway. One in three families (31%) opt for all-inclusive packages to save money on restaurant trips and drinks, while 28% opt for budget accommodation. What is interesting, however, is that despite rising holiday costs, only 14% of participants were willing to take their children out of school time for the price of a cheaper holiday.
