Five-Star Hotel Bar Manager Reveals Their Favourite Summer Cocktails

Warmer days are just around the corner, and what could be more perfect to enjoy than sipping a refreshing cocktail in the sun? According to the CGA’s Cocktails in Europe report[1], 31% of UK drinkers choose to order a cocktail when they go out, so it’s no surprise that many of us are also looking for recipes to enjoy at home.

Jordan Davis, Bar Manager at the five-star The Grand, York, one of the most prestigious hotels in York, shares his suggestions for the perfect summer cocktail.

Jordan says, “For the warmer season, the flavour profile of drinks should be light, citric and refreshing.”

“In summer we use lighter spirits; like gins, mezcal and white rums, as well as more vibrant berries and herbs. Summer cocktails need something that stands at the forefront of the drink to elevate it, which berries and herbs are perfect for.”

Here Jordan shares his 3 must-make summer cocktails:

Caipirinha

Caipirinhas originate in Brazil, using Brazilian cachaca rum as a base, sweet brown sugar and bring a sharpness with a zesty and refreshing lime kick. Transport yourself to South American carnival celebrations with this simple-to-make cocktail.

Ingredients:

–        50ml cachaca white rum

–        Lime wedges

–        2 levelled bar spoons (10g) of brown sugar

Method:

Add brown sugar and lime wedges to a rocks glass and muddle. Add the cachaca, fill the glass with crushed ice and stir. Sit back and enjoy.

Gimlet

Originally used by sailors to ward off scurvy with citrus fruit juice, Gimlets are now a cocktail menu staple and one of the easiest to recreate at home.

Ingredients:

–        50ml London dry gin

–        25ml lemon juice

–        25ml sugar syrup

Method:

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, add ice and shake hard for roughly 10 seconds. Strain into a martini glass and sample this refreshing palate cleanser.

Negroni

For those who prefer something on the boozier side, Negronis are perfect as they contain equal parts of three different spirits. This balanced cocktail comes from Italy and is perfect to sip on a sunny evening.

Ingredients:

–        25ml gin

–        25ml Campari

–        25ml sweet vermouth

Method:

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass and stir for around 20 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass and enjoy this iconic classic.

To take your at-home cocktails to the next level, Jordan has a few tips, “We enjoy a drink first with our eyes, so use nice glassware and buy good quality ice. Ice is your best friend when making a summer cocktail, helping to keep the drink cool whilst making it look more impressive.”

“If you’re feeling adventurous, remember that creating cocktails is all about having fun – so experiment and go wild – just remember to taste as you go!”
