There’s something joyful about lunch in a traditional English pub. Especially one set in the verdant greens of the countryside.
The Star is on the edge of the picturesque village of Witley, near Godalming in Surrey. It’s rural yet easily accessible, being close to London and just a short drive off the A3.
This hugely popular local pub closed its doors in 2021, one of many such establishments suffering this fate around the UK. But then good fortune struck when it was bought by James Lyon Shaw and Jamie Dobbin and reopened under the Brucan Pubs umbrella (this is their fourth opening).
A great deal of effort has been made to restore The Star to its former glory, and you can tell. From the exterior festooned with vibrant blooms in baskets and tubs to the wooden-beamed interior with its tempting bar area, large comfortable bar stools and soft, worn leather armchairs it’s everything a pub should be. There’s a large garden and terrace for alfresco eating and of course a fireplace for roaring winter fires.
At the bar you’ll find rotating cask ales and an impressive and diverse wine list as well as unexpectedly good cocktails. But it’s the food that’s the main attraction here.
The menu is packed with seasonal specials including game, meat and fish with a focus on British specialties using fresh local ingredients. It changes regularly and there are weekly specials including Burger and Brew, Pub Quiz, Steak & Malbec and Fish & Fizz nights.
We loved the tastiest of pumpkin soup and indulgently velvety duck liver parfait to start. Followed by slow-cooked pork ragu with home-made pappardelle and the most succulent take on a roast chicken dinner paired with an incredible bottle of Pinot Noir from France.
For pudding, custard tart was served with the booziest of fresh cherries – a perfectly satisfying finish to our meal. The superb food and friendly welcome meant we left with a warm feeling inside, both physically and mentally. Just like anyone should after a delicious lunch in an excellent local pub.
