Why white bedding remains a popular choice

white bedding

When you look at images of pristine, jealousy-inducing bedrooms, the bedding is often white and wrinkle-free. White bedding has always been a popular choice and that doesn’t seem to be changing any time soon. White bedding has a number of properties which make it popular, as well as looking beautiful.

White bedding can be hard to care for though, so here are some tips to keep your whites looking fresh and clean.

Benefits of white bedding

Sleep induction

Colour psychology allows scientists to examine the effect that certain colours have on the human brain. For example, yellow is a colour that evokes liveliness and happiness.

White is a colour that is often associated with being calm and good. It is also good for introducing feelings of relaxation, more so than any other colour. This could be the reason why hotel rooms use a lot of white to help visitors unwind and sleep soundly.

Versatility in design

White bedding is great for being a blank canvas for designers to utilise in several different interior schemes.

Although the bed is often the focal point of the bedroom, it is a large piece of furniture to incorporate. By keeping it simple, you can let the rest of the room do the talking and show off your personality.

Freshness

With proper care, your white bedding can look as crisp and clean as it did when you first bought it. This fresh appearance helps to keep your room feeling clean and comforting, making it an ideal sleep space.

Thread count

The thread count of sheets is defined by how many individual threads are both horizontally and vertically in an inch square of fabric. Different thread counts have different effects on the sheets themselves.

The higher the thread count, the more threads are interwoven. This means that the sheets will feel smoother and thicker. This will also mean that the fabric is more durable. However, the thread count you opt for is entirely down to personal preference.

Ways to enhance using colour

White bedding works well as a blank space to add touches of colour. For example, you can brighten the space with bright cushions which can be interchanged on a whim or with the seasons.

You could also incorporate blankets to add texture as well as colour. Plus this will make your room extra cosy and warm which is especially nice in the colder months.

How to look after your white bedding

With all bedding, the unspoken rule is that your bedsheets should be washed every two weeks. Scientists do argue, however, that it should be weekly to keep your skin clean and healthy.

Keeping your washing machine clean will help to keep your whites pristine. Try to deep clean your machine every 1-3 months. A lot of machines come with a special cleaning cycle, but if yours doesn’t you will need some cupboard staples. Baking soda and vinegar are helpful for getting every inch clean if you add them to an empty hot wash.

Washing powder is important too. You will want to have one that is rich in enzymes to help break up tough stains properly. High-quality detergents often need less heat to do a good job, so by washing sheets in a cooler wash you are protecting the fibres of your bedding.

To keep them as white as possible, you may want to soak them in bleach. This could damage the integrity of the material so instead use a mix of warm water, white vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda.
