Lunch at Linthwaite House Hotel: Elegant Dining with Incredible Views — and Surprisingly Affordable Too

During a recent two-week escape to the Lake District — a place we return to year after year — I stumbled upon a corner of this beloved region that felt truly magical.

Despite countless visits, this spot somehow eluded us until now, and I knew the moment I found it, I had to share it. Tucked away from the well-trodden trails and busy viewpoints, it offered the kind of beauty that makes you pause, breathe deeper, and feel quietly awestruck.

Perched high above the shimmering waters of Lake Windermere, Linthwaite House Hotel is more than just a luxury retreat — it’s a piece of Lake District history. With roots dating back to the early 20th century, the property was originally built as a private residence before being transformed into an elegant country house hotel. Over the decades, it has welcomed guests seeking both tranquility and indulgence, offering unrivalled panoramic views across England’s largest lake and the surrounding fells. Following a thoughtful refurbishment by Leeu Collection, Linthwaite House now blends classic British charm with contemporary design, making it a serene and stylish base for exploring one of the UK’s most iconic landscapes.

On this occasion, we were simply visiting for lunch, and we lucked out with the weather. Arriving to glorious sunshine and clear blue skies, we were instantly in high spirits. A warm welcome from the friendly concierge set the tone, and we were soon shown to a sun-drenched terrace nestled within Linthwaite’s beautifully kept gardens. The views? Absolutely transfixing — easily some of the most breathtaking I’ve ever seen in the Lake District. With rolling fells, the shimmer of Lake Windermere below, and a light breeze carrying the scent of spring, it was pure magic. And I knew, even before our meal arrived, that this wouldn’t be our last visit.

Linthwaite House is, without question, an upscale escape, complete with all the bells and whistles one would expect from a five-star country house hotel. Set within idyllic surroundings, the property features 24 individually designed rooms, each thoughtfully styled to reflect the natural beauty of the Lake District landscape. It’s a place where elegance meets comfort, and attention to detail is evident in everything from the furnishings to the serene garden paths. The hotel is also home to the acclaimed Henrock restaurant, helmed by Michelin-starred chef Simon Rogan, where modern British dishes are crafted with seasonal ingredients — many sourced from Rogan’s own farm in nearby Cartmel.

Today, however, we were dining at the hotel’s more relaxed offering — The Bar & Conservatory. But don’t be fooled by the casual label; this space is no less fabulous. As we settled at our table on the terrace with a glass of something cold and crisp, we couldn’t help but pause to soak in the uninterrupted vistas of Lake Windermere and the rolling Lakeland fells beyond. It’s the kind of setting that makes a light lunch feel like a little luxury.

Now, onto the food — and what is most definitely the star of the show. The all-day menu at The Bar & Conservatory strikes a confident balance between contemporary flair and timeless classics, with just the right hint of avant-garde. It’s clear that thoughtful curation underpins the offering, with dishes that feel both comforting and quietly sophisticated. Whether you’re in the mood for something light and seasonal or rich and indulgent, the menu caters to all palates — without ever feeling predictable.

My husband was tempted by tradition — but I managed to sway him toward something a little more adventurous. As for me, I couldn’t resist starting with the soufflé, served alongside a mixed leaf salad and a generous pour of Mrs Bell’s blue cheese fondue, finished with a hint of garlic oil.
Let me just say: OMG. It was like eating a perfectly risen cloud, delicately crisp on the outside and impossibly light within, bathed in a luxuriously rich, velvety cheese sauce that delivered depth without overpowering – I didn’t want it to end!

His lordship eventually settled on the oxtail ravioli — and he was over the moon with his choice. The dish featured tender, slow-cooked oxtail encased in a delicate dumpling parcel, served with creamed leeks, house-made pastrami, and a stout vinegar broth that added just the right balance of acidity.
Rich yet unexpectedly light, it was the kind of starter that leaves you quietly nodding with every bite. Sophisticated, deeply flavoured, and beautifully presented — it was a real standout.

Onto the mains, and I was craving something light and fresh. I opted for the roasted cod, which arrived beautifully cooked and served with a stout and onion purée, roasted shallots, vibrant kale, and finished with a delicate light chicken gravy. It was a wonderfully balanced plate — the cod flaked perfectly and retained its subtle flavour, while the supporting elements added richness and depth without overpowering the fish.

Across the table, my husband — who had originally eyed the traditional fish and chips — instead chose the chicken stuffed with mushroom and black pudding, served with crisp pancetta and a perfectly cooked celeriac fondant. He absolutely loved it. The dish delivered deep, rich flavours without feeling heavy – it struck that ideal balance of comfort and finesse — hearty enough to satisfy, yet elegant enough to feel special.

Even though the dishes leaned on the lighter side, we were both feeling quite content after our mains — but I can never resist a little something sweet. I went for the chocolate mousse, which was delightfully dense and decadent, served with a refreshing yoghurt ice cream and finished with crisp, golden honeycomb pieces.

It was the perfect finale: rich meets tangy meets crunchy. The contrast in textures and temperatures was spot-on, and yes — it was absolutely chef’s kiss.

Well, when in Rome… or rather, the Lake District, where it would almost be a crime not to sample one of the many takes on the iconic British sticky toffee pudding. My husband fully embraced the tradition and was absolutely delighted with his choice.

His dessert featured a beautifully rich and moist pudding, paired with miso and a caramel ice cream that added a modern, umami-laced twist to the classic. Every bite disappeared quickly — and judging by the grin on his face, it was another snog for the chef.

You might assume, given the setting, service, and elevated feel, that dining here would come with a hefty price tag — but we were pleasantly surprised. The menu at The Bar & Conservatory is very reasonably priced, especially when compared to some of the less memorable meals we’ve had in Windermere and Bowness at a similar cost. In fact, the value here feels like a well-kept secret: refined food in a luxury setting, without the eye-watering bill. It’s a rare combination that makes the experience feel all the more special.

Feeling a little melancholy at the thought of leaving so soon, we took a gentle stroll through the perfectly manicured grounds — a final indulgence before saying goodbye. The gardens are a dream in themselves, complete with a serene duck pond where guests can take to the water in the hotel’s adorable little rowing boat. It’s yet another thoughtful detail that adds to the sense of calm, charm, and quiet luxury that defines Linthwaite House Hotel. The magic really never stops — and as we made our way back to reality, one thing was certain: we’ll be back.

Linthwaite House Hotel truly offers the perfect setting for any occasion — whether it’s a relaxed and casual lunch, as we enjoyed, or an indulgent stay in what I genuinely believe to be one of the finest hotels in the Lake District. From the views and the food to the warmth of the service, it’s an experience that lingers long after you leave. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a visit — in fact, I insist on it.
