Only 8% Of Brits Hit Their 10k Recommended Daily Step Count

Worrying new data in the 2024 Deep Heat & Deep Freeze Fitness Wellness Tracker Report has revealed that Brits are still falling behind when it comes to the amount of exercise they’re doing.

Only 8% of the nation track more than the recommended 10,000 steps a day[1] on their phone or smart watch, with 10% of people clocking in under 1000 steps a day.

The research,[2] commissioned annually by Deep Heat & Deep Freeze – the iconic and time-tested warming and cooling muscle and joint care range – also discovered that 86% of respondents believe that they definitely or probably should be doing more exercise.

Physiotherapist and part of the Deep Heat and Deep Freeze expert hub, Sammy Margo says: “Although the figures are alarming they might not come as too much of a surprise; according to the Deep Heat & Deep Freeze research:

  • 48% of Brits have had an exercise related injury with 31% suffering from an ankle injury
  • 30% dealing with pain in the knee
  • 29% feeling pain in their foot
  • A quarter (25%) are suffering from leg pain.

“So, it’s likely that pain is still a big barrier to exercise.”

Infact, despite the rise in activity since 2023 tracked by Deep Heat & Deep Freeze, as one in seven people (15%) now describes their fitness levels as ‘excellent’, a 36% increase on the 2023 data,[3] there’s also been a 19% increase in the number of people reporting muscle and joint pain from 2023 to 2024.”

Elyn Marwick, Personal Trainer, Coach & Functional Fitness Specialist & International Competitor, who also swears by Deep Heat and Deep Freeze says: “There are endless positives to exercise, so it is of course a worry that so many Brits are still burdened by pain which is disrupting their movement. In fact, a high two- thirds (66%) say that muscle pain affects their day-to-day life.”

The health benefits of exercise are beyond doubt, with studies showing regular activity slows the progression of 40 chronic diseases and conditions[4] and reduces the risk of early death from disease by 30%.[5]The Deep Heat & Deep Freeze research also backs the mind benefits of exercise;  56% feel happy after exercising, 47%  feel stronger mentally and 46% feel stronger physically. Plus, 35% feel more focused.

It’s important that we continue to help sort the nation’s pain, especially as 61% turn to exercise to care for their physical health and 51% use it as a mental health support. As 76% say that their fitness levels are a key health concern of theirs, it’s time the nation got moving.

Discussing ways to help overcome muscle and joint health challenges, Pharmacist Mark Burdon and an avid Deep Heat and Deep Freeze fan says: “Deep Heat and Deep Freeze are a portfolio of tried-and-trusted products for every muscle and joint issue, which are backed by science and come in a range of formats and formulations that allow you to harness the self-care power of hot and cold therapies at the gym, on the move, or at home.

Here’s why Deep Heat and Deep Freeze are a self-care essential.

Sammy Margo explains, “Heat brings more blood to the muscle and that brings added oxygen and nutrients to enhance muscle repair, as well as relaxing aching and over tired muscles. Cooling therapies have the opposite effect, and help calm minor aches and pains by calming inflammation and reducing blood flow.”

The Deep Heat range: Warming ways:

The latest addition to the range is the new Deep Heat Muscle Rescue Heat Spray which acts fast to deliver targeted warming relief that soothes tight, tense muscles, thanks to Vanillyl butyl ether (VBE) — a hero ingredient which creates a thermal sensation on the skin by activating a specific thermal receptor (vanilloid). And all bottled up in the new climate friendly aerosol containing 0% LPG thanks to the usage of EcoValve technology. The EcoValve technology replaces Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) with compressed nitrogen which isn’t ozone depleting and produces an even, fine, misted spray for easy application.

Deep Heat Muscle Massage Roll-on Lotion combines massage with heat therapy to deliver effective warming muscle support before and after exercise. Use it before exercise to ease muscles and reduce the risk of injury, and also for muscle rehab’ to help alleviate tight muscles as well as optimizing healing conditions where internal adhesions and scar tissue after an injury are causing flare-ups when exercising. It’s also perfect for everyday use – to ease and release tight, knotted muscles in the legs, shoulders and backs, to relieve discomfort and free up movement.

DEEP HEAT FACT: Heat brings more blood to the muscle and with-it oxygen and nutrients. When combined with massage it helps:

  • Ease ‘knots’ in muscles
  • Relax the muscles and soft tissue, which leads to the muscles being able to move and stretch more easily again
