Rain or Shine: Wedding Planners Share Tips to Handle All Weather

While we’ve experienced record-breaking temperatures this summer, not all weddings have been smooth sailing with recent thunderstorms and extreme heat disrupting Brits’ big days.

Couples can feel overwhelmed when trying to factor in the forecast to their weddings, therefore the wedding experts at Queensmith have compiled their top tips on how to navigate Britain’s unpredictable weather and have the perfect day.

Laura Suttie, wedding expert at Queensmith commented:

“More and more couples are either opting for outdoor weddings or are incorporating lots of outdoor elements into their big day. However, there are a lot more considerations that go into planning an outdoor wedding, which means they can be a lot more time-consuming and complicated than an indoor wedding.

“Recent Tiktok trends show brides going to quirky extremes – like burying sausages the night before the wedding, in hope of ensuring sunny skies. However, with careful planning, your day can run smoothly no matter what the weather brings.

“When visiting outdoor venues, don’t forget to ask what would happen if it were to rain on the day. Look for venues that offer a built-in plan B, like a covered terrace, marquee or indoor option. Having peace of mind that if the weather isn’t perfect on your big day that there is a backup outdoor wedding rain plan, which will help ease your anxiety in the lead up.”

Here, Laura details their top tips on how to weather proof your wedding from all weathers.

Rain-ready wedding day tips

  1. Make a rain plan

Always have a backup plan. Talk with your venue and suppliers to ensure you can transition key moments indoors if needed.

  1. Statement umbrellas

Provide guests with matching clear or chic umbrellas. Not only do they keep everyone dry, but they also make for beautiful, cohesive photo opportunities.

  1. Flexible timelines

Build extra buffers into your schedule. A slight ceremony delay or venue shift can make all the difference if the weather changes unexpectedly.

  1. Flooring & rugs

Avoid heels sinking into mud by adding wooden platforms or waterproof rugs along high-traffic areas.

Heatwave-ready wedding ideas

  1. Shade matters

Rent marquees or canopies for outdoor spaces that lack natural cover. Your guests will appreciate the retreat from direct sun.

  1. Practical favours

Offer parasols, paper fans, or handheld electric fans. These small items add charm and comfort throughout the day.

  1. Suncream station

Set up a ‘sun protection bar’ with SPF, cooling sprays, and blotting papers to keep guests fresh and safe.

  1. Timing is everything

Avoid scheduling your ceremony during the hottest part of the day. Consider sun placement and shade when arranging seating.

Bug-proofing your celebration

From wasps in Wiltshire to mosquitoes in Mykonos, bugs can be unwelcome guests.

  1. Natural repellents

Citronella candles double as decor and deterrent, while lavender sachets and eucalyptus bundles are fragrant, floral and functional.

  1. Bug repellent stations

Stock guest bathrooms or welcome baskets with repellents in spray or wipe form for added peace of mind.

Taming the wind

  1. Secure the Decor

Use clips, weights or tape to keep tablecloths, signage, and fabric draping from flying away.

  1. Stable florals

Opt for low, compact centrepieces and weighted vases to prevent floral mishaps mid-ceremony.

  1. Weight down place settings

Tuck menu cards under plates, use weighted napkin rings, and choose sturdy glassware to keep everything in place.

  1. Strategic decor placement

Keep lightweight items away from open, breezy areas and reserve those spaces for heavier installations.
