This year sees the 50th anniversary of Big Green Egg, creator of the world’s most sought-after and instantly recognisable outdoor oven. Since the brand’s inception by founder Ed Fisher in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1974, it has become a brand loved and admired around the world and has grown from strength to strength. To celebrate the brand’s 50th birthday, Big Green Egg will be launching a schedule of events and experiences at iconic locations around the UK, 50 new recipes by some of the most famous names in the food industry, and two new and limited-edition products.
From the start, Ed Fisher took inspiration from how cooking over fire brings people together, and the EGG has been at the heart of parties and gatherings all over the world for five decades. To mark the 50th anniversary, Big Green Egg will be bringing back the limited-edition Chiminea – a perfect complement to the EGG, and there to extend outdoor gatherings late into a summer’s evening or to keep guests toasty through the colder months. Produced in small batches from handmade casts, the Chiminea is crafted from the same NASA-grade ceramics as the Big Green Egg, offering unrivalled fuel efficiency, even heat distribution and striking good looks.
In addition, Big Green Egg UK has also teamed up with award-winning British designer Steve Esdaile to create the ultimate outdoor kitchen island for the Large EGG. Crafted in Manchester from materials of the very highest quality, the outdoor kitchen includes a virtually indestructible Dekton worktop, which flows into an overhanging counter, perfect for guests to pull up a barstool. Each island is made to order and can be customised with the colours and finishes that suit the customer’s setting.
Although Europe was introduced to the Big Green Egg 20 years ago, the story began in Atlanta in 1974 at Fisher’s small shop, Pachinko House, which was primarily devoted to arcade games imported from Japan. To hedge against the games’ seasonal slumps in demand, Fisher imporated a few domed clay ovens inspired by traditional Japanese kamado grills, and as a marketing exercise, began using one of the grills to cook chicken wings outside the store as a lure to customers. With a huge demand resulting from barbecue-loving Atlantans, Ed pivoted to focus solely on the kamado business.
Frustrations around the complexity of importing as well as the lack of control over the design of the products led Ed to build a barbecue of his own and with this, Big Green Egg was born. Over the decades, other kamado-style barbecues have appeared on the market, but none can hold a torch to Ed Fisher’s original.
The brand took off after one of Fisher’s friends – who worked at the faculty where lightweight, heat-resistant ceramics were developed for NASA space shuttles – helped him identify the perfect material for the EGG’s shell. These patented NASA-grade ceramics offer unrivalled heat retention, control and durability, which is why the product today comes with a lifetime guarantee.
Over the years, the developments of the EGG have progressed steadily, resulting in several innovations. Three sizes are available in the UK – the Minimax, Large and Extra Large – that are designed in the EGG’s distinctive racing-green dome and provide unrivalled heat retention, control and durability, and cooks restaurant-quality dishes using eight different modes: grilling, roasting, baking, low & slow, pan cooking, dirty cooking, smoking and rotisserie.
Ed Fisher, Founder of Big Green Egg says: “Big Green Egg is the result of 50 years of solid foundation, innovation, research and development, where every detail has been extensively examined and tested. Over the years, we have developed a unique cooking appliance and achieved the goal of producing the best kamado in the world. We are still investing in ongoing improvements so that Big Green Egg remains the best kamado-style cooker worldwide. It’s safe to say that Big Green Egg has been imitated but never equalled, and we intend for it to stay that way for another 50 years to come.”
