Winter Warning: How Cold Weather Could Be Burning Your Hair

As temperatures drop across the UK, hair experts are warning that many of us are unknowingly causing more heat damage to our hair than during summer,  especially with increased use of straighteners, curling wands, and blow dryers.

According to Danielle Louise, hair and beauty expert on Fresha, the world’s leading beauty and wellness booking platform, the colder months can make hair more brittle, dry, and vulnerable to heat damage — meaning the same styling routine that worked in summer could now be silently frying your strands.

“In winter, indoor heating and cold air strip hair of moisture. That lack of hydration means the cuticle isn’t sealed, so when you add a 200-degree straightener, it’s like applying heat to dry wood,” explains Danielle.

“People often notice more frizz, split ends, and snapping around this time of year — it’s not just the weather, it’s how we style to cope with it.”

Recent Google search data analysed by Fresha shows a 107% rise in searches this month for hair tool advice in the UK, signalling that more people are looking to perfect their styling routines as the festive season approaches.

Common Hair Tool Mistakes – Especially in Cold Weather

  1. Skipping Heat Protectant
Many underestimate how vital this is in winter. A lightweight spray or serum forms a barrier, reducing breakage and dullness.
  2. Styling Wet or Damp Hair
Straightening even slightly damp hair can cause the outer layer to “bubble,” leading to permanent heat damage.
  3. Setting Tools Too Hot
You don’t need salon-level temperatures at home. 180°C is ideal for most hair types — anything higher risks breaking the cuticle.
  4. Not Adjusting for Winter Conditions
Drier air means you need to compensate with hydrating masks and leave-in conditioners before using any heated tool.
  5. Ignoring the Build-Up
Product residue on tools causes uneven heating — always clean your plates and barrels to avoid “hot spots” that singe strands.

Cold-Weather Styling Tips

  • Always apply a hydrating serum or oil before bed to replenish lost moisture.
  • Invest in silk pillowcases — they help retain natural oils overnight.
  • Use a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush when detangling cold, static hair.
  • Space out heat styling days and try air-drying whenever possible.

“You can still achieve a sleek, polished look in winter,” says Danielle Louise. “It’s just about adjusting your routine for the season. Your hair needs as much protection as your skin.”
