Garden Hose Hacks: Expert Advice for Smarter Outdoor Watering

Britons preparing for the warmer weather are being given tips on how to prevent damage to their garden hose during the sunny months.

The gardening experts at GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk have put together their advice on looking after this vital piece of summer garden equipment.

They suggest regularly checking for leaks and tears in the hose and preventing kinks by storing on a hose reel.

The experts recommend storing out of direct sunlight to reduce damage – storing in an outbuilding or garden shed will keep the hose away from harmful UV rays that weaken the hose material over time.

And they recommend keeping away from sharp objects and avoiding high water pressure to keep your hose working well during the summer months.

A spokesperson for Garden Buildings Direct, said: “The garden hose really comes into its own during the summer months, helping keep the garden well watered and blooming.

“Following a few simple steps will help prolong the life of this piece of garden equipment. Keeping it out of sunlight and draining after use will both help prevent cracks, splits and general deterioration.

“Storing away from sharp tools can prevent accidental cuts and punctures as can carrying rather than dragging your hose over rough surfaces.

“Looking after your hose will not only save you money by not having to replace so frequently, it’ll also mean a lush, well watered garden throughout the warmer weather.”

Here are GardenBuildingDirect.co.uk’s tips for maintaining your hose during the summer months.

Prevent kinks

Kinks in a hosepipe (where it has sharp bents, twists or folds) can lead to cracks, splits, and leaks, as well as restricting water flow. Use a hose reel to store to prevent kinks and straighten out before use.

Avoid direct sunlight

Direct sunlight can weaken the hose material and lead to cracks and splits. Always store in a shaded area – your garden shed is ideal – or use a hose reel box for protection.

Drain after use

Drain your hose after use to avoid water stagnation, mould and internal damage. This is particularly important during warmer weather. Draining a hose is easy: simply disconnect, straighten out and lift one end to let the water flow out

Check for leaks

Check your hoses for any signs of damage including small leaks or cracks that could get worse. Make sure to replace washers and connectors as needed to prolong the life of your hose.

Rough surfaces

Avoid dragging across rough surfaces like gravel and concrete. Instead pick your hose up and carry it.

Sharp tools

Avoid storing your hose close to sharp tools including shears and spades which could cause punctures or cuts. This is important to remember if you’re storing in the shed.

Excessive water pressure

Avoid excessive water pressure – high pressure can stress the hose material. Think about using a pressure regulator, especially if you’re attaching the hose to a pressure washer or sprinkler system.

Clean the exterior

When you get a chance, give the outside of the hose a wipe down with a damp cloth. This will remove any dirt, algae or grime which could cause your hose to deteriorate.
