It’s finally that time of the year again where much loved high street supermarkets release a fresh batch of Christmas sandwiches. With so many options available, determining the best one and more importantly, how to recreate it at home can be a challenge.

To help provide some inspiration for those looking to elevate their festive sandwich game, HelloFresh has looked at some of the most popular holiday sandwiches over the last few years, revealing the key ingredients that are essential for recreating them in your own kitchen.

Meat

Turkey continues to reign supreme as the favoured meat for festive sandwiches among Brits. However not everything at Christmas has to be turkey, many supermarkets are expanding their sandwich offerings by incorporating variety, including options like pigs in blankets, chicken and beef and a range of seafood such as salmon and prawn.

Stuffing

Stuffing is a must have ingredient in your festive sandwich to get you in the christmassy mood. If you’re looking for the taste of traditional, then a rich sage and onion flavour stuffing should be your go to. Alternatively, create your own and add a unique twist by incorporating chorizo into your stuffing or make your own pork and cranberry stuffing balls, inspired by the award-winning Master Butcher, Edwards of Conwy.

Vegetables

Leafy green salads such as lettuce and spinach are making a comeback this year and are arguably one of the best sandwich fillers for your festive snack. They add a refreshing twist to your sandwich. If you’re looking for something a bit different, try substituting for brussel sprouts mixed with onions and bacon or colourful red cabbage

Sauce

This is where you can really get creative with your sandwich as many supermarkets have embraced unique sauces this year. A popular contender for festive sandwiches this year is gravy mayo paired with cranberry sauce to keep the sandwich moist and stop it from running dry. Another one is cranberry chutney which pairs well with Turkey to elevate the flavour and give it an extra tangy kick. And finally, apple cider sauce complements many proteins including pork, chicken, turkey and sausages to create a sweet and slightly tangy contrast.
