The streets of London abound with an impressive diversity of Indian restaurants. There are over 3,500 of them in the capital, said to be more than in Delhi and Mumbai combined. Whether that’s an urban myth or not, there are certainly plenty of ways to get that Indian fix, some better than others.
When it comes to the best of the best, renowned chef Atul Kochar is right up there having brought his version of Indian fine dining to the UK in 1994. Born in Jamshedpur in India he’s the first Indian chef in the world to receive a Michelin star (for Tamarind in 2001). And now he’s behind this exciting new venture, Kanishka in Mayfair.
Kanishka opened in March this year and explores the lesser-known regional cuisine of India, all presented with a contemporary twist. The Pan-Indian menu showcases the diversity of spices, ingredients and techniques that have defined the country’s gastronomy for centuries. All using the best of fresh British ingredients. It’s a glamorous space with mirrored walls, custom-made sparkling chandeliers hanging from the dramatic black ceiling and comfortable seating.
The masterful blend of an orchestra of Indian spices and the very best of British ingredients results in an incredible fine dining experience. Starters include Cromer Crab bonda – little crisp fritters with flavours that dance on your tongue, indulgent Orkney scallops padi masala and the more traditional luscious chicken tikka and tandoori lamb.
There’s a selection of curries and biryanis and other delicacies like pan-fried sea bass, kadhai prawns and griddled halibut. And every side you could desire, including the fluffiest of saffron rice, the richest of soft and buttery naan and Kanishka’s signature black dhal, possibly the best dhal I’ve ever eaten. There’s also a tempting dessert section with chocolate delights, vanilla panna cotta, mango kulfi and sorbets to satisfy the most discerning of pudding lovers. A spectacular selection of dishes that elevate the whole Indian eating experience to another level. Atul Kochur’s genius shines through yet again in this stylishly welcoming addition to Mayfair’s exceptional dining scene.
