Wine is a summer staple for all occasions, but in today’s climate of ever-growing choice, finding the perfect pour is no small feat. However, Head Sommelier of Mayfair’s Greco-Roman restaurant Bacchanalia, Zsofia Kiss, in on hand to share her top wines of the season, making for the perfect pair to your summer soirée.
With Greece being a prime holiday hotspot this summer, Zsofia reveals it’s also a hotspot for some of the finest wines, unveiling her top choices below:
Fizz never fails: Domaine Karanika, Cuvée Spéciale, extra brut
Hailing from Northern Greece, Domaine Karanika is renowned for its commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. It’s made through a traditional method, using a blend of Assyrtiko and Xinomavro, with the crisp and fresh sparkling notes making for the ideal apéritif. Its fine bubbles and extra brut style, along with the green apple citrus and white flower aromas, make this sophisticated profile the perfect paring for a variety of summer dishes – it assists with the likes of highlighting the freshness of seafood, the sweetness of salads and balances the richness of cheese.
A summer red: Bacchanalia Nemea, Domaine Skouras, Peloponnese
This esteemed red is one of Bacchanalia’s own label wines and made from 100% Agiorgitiko in the ancient region of Nemea in the Peloponnese, home of one of the original sites of the Ancient Summer Olympic Games. This wine showcases the variety and unique characteristics of the Greek grape variety, hosting rich fruity flavours with hints of chocolate and cedar. This wine pairs perfectly with summer classics – it can assist in bringing out the smokiness of grilled meats, balances a hearty pasta dish and brings out the sweetness of vegetables. This versatile wine can also be enjoyed lightly chilled – perfect for the outdoor summer dining.
Both these wines can be enjoyed as part of Bacchanalia Olympia celebrations, in honour of the games. Head to https://bacchanalia.co.uk/summer/ to learn more about the wines and dishes on offer, and to book your table now.
