TikTok has revolutionised the beauty industry. With a constant flow of undiscovered beauty hacks, TikTok is the go-to place for uncovering the latest trends and different methods to aid in looking our best.

Experts at beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha have compiled a know-all guide for hyaluronic acid, debunking the latest skincare favourite just in time for Christmas.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally by the body and is found in the eyes and joints to act as a lubricant to keep them moisturised. Hyaluronic acid is also used to help heal the body after injury as it reduces swelling and speeds up the recovery process.

However, it is also becoming more commonly known as a fantastic skincare ingredient to help reduce signs of ageing and hydrate, revitalise and moisturise your skin.

The acid is a humectant, which means it helps retain moisture in your skin and works to recover any dryer areas, keeping your skin looking radiant and healthy.

The curiosity around hyaluronic acid online has increased drastically since the beauty industry found its feet on TikTok. Online searches for ‘benefits of hyaluronic acid’ have skyrocketed over 274% worldwide over the past month, and hashtags such as #hyaluronicacid on TikTok have surpassed 2.5 billion views.

How do you use hyaluronic acid?

Typical hyaluronic acids are produced and sold in a serum form that you can apply to your face when the skin is damp after cleansing and toning. After this step, you can moisturise as normal, although some moisturisers include hyaluronic acid already, which means it will be the second last step in your routine before sunscreen.

The latest method for applying hyaluronic acid is to use it on your lips to revitalise and maintain a soft and supple look. This method has recently become increasingly popular on TikTok, with the hashtag #hyaluronicacidlips hitting over 100 thousand views and #hyaluronicacidlipbalm totalling over 226 thousand views.

– This method of keeping your lips hydrated and plump is done by applying a hyaluronic acid serum to your lips, followed by a layer of your favourite lip balm or mask to seal it in.

It is recommended to apply hyaluronic acid to your lips once or twice a day alongside your regular lip balm for at least two weeks to see a significant difference in plumpness. Still, you can also see and feel great results after the first use as the products absorb moisture immediately.

Online searches for ‘natural lip plumper’ have skyrocketed in interest by 1,253% worldwide over the past week, over 12 times more than the average, proving how keen people are to discover new ways of getting fuller lips more naturally.

This method is a great way to get healthier and plumper-looking lips for less with a regular bottle of serum alongside a lip balm costing less than £15/$18.95 from many drugstores.

A beauty expert from Fresha commented:

“The beauty industry is hugely influential, with skincare enthusiasts desperate to know the newest ways to revitalise and keep their skin looking young and radiant. There is no doubt that the impact of social media has transformed the way these new techniques are shared and discovered.

This guide is a fantastic way to prove how quickly a new trend can skyrocket into popularity and reveal how you can successfully implement hyaluronic acid into your skincare routine whilst understanding what the substance is and does for your skin. When exploring new ingredients for your regime, it’s always worth visiting a professional, whether that’s at a salon or spa, to make sure hyaluronic acid is right for your specific skin type.”
