The flaxseed gel trend: A Botox substitute or beauty myth?

Flaxseed, well known for its wide range of health benefits, is now trending in the beauty world.

Many people are now making ‘flaxseed gel’ by mixing flaxseed with water, applying it to their skin, and touting it as a DIY alternative to Botox.

However, experts in cosmetic dermatology are not convinced that flaxseed gel can match Botox’s results.

Dr. Akis Ntonos, co-founder of Aion Aesthetics and partner with Certainly Health, weighs in on the matter. 

“Flaxseed is a great ingredient that offers a whole host of health and cosmetic benefits, but it’s not a viable substitute for Botox.

“The effects of flaxseed gel are entirely different from those of Botox, and the two should not be used interchangeably.”

What is flaxseed?

Flaxseeds are small but mighty oil seeds known for their rich content of omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fibre, and antioxidants, all of which contribute to overall health.

Incorporating just a teaspoonful of flaxseeds into your daily diet can improve digestion, lower cholesterol, and support weight management. 

These versatile seeds have a neutral flavour, making them easy to add to your meals. You can sprinkle them over your morning porridge or cereal, blend them into smoothies, and bake them into snack bars. 

When it comes to skincare, flaxseeds can be made into a gel that, when applied to your skin, boosts hydration, reduces inflammation and promotes the skin’s elasticity. 

What makes flaxseed different from Botox?

“Botox is a neurotoxin that works by temporarily paralysing the facial muscles responsible for wrinkles. This reduces the appearance of crow’s feet, fine lines, and other signs of ageing.

“For most people, Botox results last between three and four months.”

“On the other hand, flaxseed gel operates in an entirely different way. It does not affect muscle activity at all.

“While it does hydrate the skin, giving it a youthful glow, it doesn’t address wrinkles at their source like Botox does. The effects of flaxseed gel, while beneficial, are temporary and typically last only a few days.”

Why are people using flaxseed instead of botox?

“It is likely that people are turning to flaxseed gel as a substitute for Botox to test out changes in their appearance before committing to more permanent cosmetic procedures.

“For many, the thought of getting Botox for the first time can be daunting. It’s completely understandable to want to explore less invasive options before deciding whether Botox is right for you.

“However, using flaxseed gel isn’t a realistic way to preview the effects of Botox. There are more effective methods, such as opting for hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, which can give you a better sense of the potential results. 

“By consulting with a professional, you can receive personalised advice and recommendations.  These will be tailored to your specific needs, whether you’re seeking subtle tweaks or dramatic results.”

What are some alternative beauty benefits of flaxseed?

“Flaxseed gel is an excellent natural conditioner for the hair. When used in place of hair gel, it can add shine, strengthen the hair, and promote a healthy scalp.

“In addition to hair care, it serves as a great natural moisturiser. It is high in antioxidants, helping to protect the skin against environmental aggressors.

“When regularly applied, it can soothe dry skin and improve the skin’s overall texture.

“While it won’t replace Botox, it makes a great addition to any skincare, hair care, or general wellness routine.”
