6 Interior Design Trends to Watch This Autumn

As Autumn approaches, the shift in seasonal weather will inevitably impact the way we decorate our homes. With a focus on warmth, cosiness and comfort, autumn interior decorating encompasses the pleasure of evenings spent relaxing on the sofa, and snug mornings lounging in bed.

In search of interior design inspiration, Pinterest have reported a huge 300% increase in searches for “autumn home decor” comparing month by month.

In response, interior design experts and Graham and Green owners, Jamie and Lou Graham comment,
“Autumn is the perfect time to reconsider how our home can encourage feelings of serenity and comfort. It’s time to focus on plush textures and natural elements to embrace key autumnal themes.”

The pair share their expert insight into six key trends we can expect to see take over homes this autumn.

Warm Neutrals and Earthy Tones

Jamie and Lou predict warm neutral palettes, including beiges, creams and soft browns will feature across furnishings and decor in many homes. The warmth from these hues will create a cosy and inviting atmosphere, ideal for transitioning into the cooler months. In particular, earth tones will support a deeper connection to nature, bringing a sense of calmness and comfort into the home.

In addition, Pinterest have predicted serene hues of green will be favoured across homes this autumn, as searches for “green home decor” have soared by 2670%*.

Natural Wood Accents

This autumn, light and natural wood elements are expected to feature prominently throughout home decor themes. From intricately carved furniture to subtle wooden accents, these elements add an organic touch to interiors. This is particularly prevalent throughout the Japanadi style, where wellbeing and nature fuse.

This trend also highlights the importance of sustainability and the timeless appeal of natural materials, aligning with the growing demand for eco-conscious home furnishings.

Textural Richness

Jamie and Lou advise that autumnal decor should have a strong emphasis on textures, such as plush velvets, boucle fabrics, papier-mâché finishes and natural jutes which contribute to a rich, tactile experience. To embrace the cosy feeling of autumn in your home, the pair recommend focusing on soft home furnishings and accessories including curtains, cushions and lamp shades, and creating cosy nooks to relax into.

Bauhaus Influences Curves and Organic Shapes

Reflecting the core tenets of Bauhaus, furniture and accessories should celebrate the union of form and function this autumn, according to Jamie and Lou. The pair suggest curved lines and organic shapes for a harmonious blend of simplicity and sophistication, encouraging a modern yet soft aesthetic in any space.

Vintage and Handcrafted Elements

A key theme throughout this year’s autumn decor is vintage-inspired items that pay homage to traditional craftsmanship. This includes hand-block printed fabrics, traditionalist “ex-voto” ornaments, artisanal accessories, and furniture pieces that reflect a dedication to quality and uniqueness.

Jamie and Lou applaud handcrafted elements that are infused with character and charm, resonating with an appreciation for one-of-a-kind pieces.

Flora and Fauna

Floral patterns, botanical motifs and forms drawn from the natural world are predicted to be prevalent throughout autumnal decor. These designs bring the beauty of the outdoors inside, creating a serene and natural environment.

The use of botanical and wildlife elements encompasses the trend towards biophilic design, enhancing the connection between indoor spaces and nature throughout the year.
