How to maintain your fire pit during winter

maintain your garden fire pit

Households are being advised on the steps they can take to ensure their garden fire pits are well-maintained throughout the colder months ahead.

Home and garden experts from Posh.co.uk have shared their top tips to follow to keep fire pits in excellent condition when being used this winter.

Garden fire pits have seen a surge in popularity in recent years and have become one of the most sought after garden additions.

Whilst fire pits can be used all year round, many people may not want to brave the winter conditions and won’t be seeing their fire pits again until the spring.

For those looking to make full use of their outdoor areas throughout winter, it’s important to make sure fire pits are maintained and well-cared for in order to withstand winter conditions.

Andy Ellis, home and garden expert at Posh.co.uk says: “Fire pits are an excellent addition to any garden and an item that has really exploded in popularity since the pandemic.

“A lot of people are looking to make use of their gardens all year round and a fire pit can help you do that.

“But they do need to be well-maintained and looked after, especially through the winter months, otherwise you could find yourself repurchasing one sooner than you’d have liked.

“Even if you don’t plan on using your fire pit during winter, it’s important to keep it clean at all times and make sure it’s stored in a dry area when it’s not in use. Investment in a quality waterproof cover will be a great addition for winter as well and should help to keep your fire pit in impeccable condition throughout the colder months.”

Tips to maintain your fire pit through winter

Clean after use

Once your fire pit has completely cooled down after use, make sure it is cleaned thoroughly. Leaving ash inside to get wet and mouldy during bad weather will reduce its lifespan and can cause rust and corrosion.

Store in a dry area

Storing your fire pit in a dry area when not in use is especially important in winter when the weather conditions are worse. Investing in a quality, waterproof cover would also be a great addition to protect your fire pit from the elements.

Store accessories indoors

You should not leave any fire pit accessories or fuel inside your fire pit throughout winter in order to prevent any potential moisture damage. Try to store these indoors, and it’s also beneficial that firewood is stored off the ground and covered to prevent decay and infestation.

Dry your fire pit before use

It’s important that you completely dry your fire pit before using it throughout winter. Moisture trapped in a cold fire pit can freeze and cause damage, and any ice that has formed should be left to thaw naturally so you don’t cause any cracks or damage from rapid temperature change.

Protect surrounding areas

If your fire pit is built into a patio ensure you have a proper drainage system to prevent a build up of water inside or around the fire pit from rain, snow and ice.

Check gas connections

If you own a gas fire pit, disconnect any gas lines and safely store them away if you’re not planning on using your fire pit over winter. Store tanks in a dry and well ventilated area away from any harsh temperature changes.
