Off Grid Girona Opens in Catalonia’s Alta Garrotxa
Opening today, Off Grid Girona is a new ten-bedroom rural hotel with an adjoining four-bedroom barn, set within a restored 17th-century masia in the Alta Garrotxa region of Catalonia. Located at the base of Mare de Déu del Mont, amidst ancient forests and mainland Spain’s largest volcanic landscape, the property celebrates nature, simplicity, and shared experiences.
More open home than hotel, Off Grid Girona invites guests to disconnect from the noise of daily life and reconnect with nature, community, and craft. Shared spaces, communal dining, and collaborations with local makers form the heart of its offering.

A Personal Vision
Founded by Gerard Greene, co-founder of YOTEL, Off Grid Girona represents a return to a more grounded life. After years in fast-paced urban hospitality, Greene relocated to the hills above Girona to restore this Catalan farmhouse and create something slower, smaller, and more sustainable.
The design and restoration were led in collaboration with Girona-based designer Ariadna Puigdomenech, who focused on retaining the character of the original stone building. Interiors feature limewash walls, terracotta, reclaimed wood, and a neutral palette inspired by the landscape. Upcycled furnishings sit alongside modern comforts such as monsoon showers, stone basins, and hand-cut La Bisbal tiles. Local makers are showcased throughout, with Olively bathroom amenities and Bekume bed linen reflecting a commitment to craft and low-impact sourcing.

Food and Community
Food is central to the Off Grid experience. Guided by a hyper-local ethos, the daily-changing menu is created from seasonal produce, prepared by the resident chef, and served family-style at the communal poolside table. Local wines, small-batch coffee, and craft beers are stocked in honesty bars throughout the house. Collaborators include nearby cheesemakers, bakers, and farmers, deepening the sense of connection to the land.
Space to Restore and Explore
The grounds encourage both rest and activity. A pool fringed with wildflower gardens and shaded terraces sets the scene for slow afternoons, while lounges throughout the house invite quiet retreat. A garden studio hosts yoga classes, workshops, and private events, while cyclists can make use of a fully equipped bike garage before setting out on Girona’s renowned road and gravel routes.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability is embedded into Off Grid Girona’s DNA — from natural spring water, composting, and drought-tolerant gardens, to solar-ready systems and plans for full renewable energy and expanded rainwater harvesting.
Discover La Garrotxa
Situated in the heart of La Garrotxa, a lesser-known region of Catalonia, Off Grid Girona offers curated hiking and cycling routes through dormant volcanoes, ancient forests, and dramatic natural scenery. Guests can also enjoy hot-air balloon rides, vineyard visits, and wine tastings, while nearby towns such as Besalú, Banyoles, and Girona provide rich cultural and historical experiences.
