Discover a wealth of free, kid-friendly activities and attractions across the UK this May

As a parent, the costs of raising children can quickly add up, making it challenging to find affordable ways to keep them entertained. Fortunately, there are a wealth of free, kid-friendly activities and attractions all across the UK that can provide a fun and enriching experience for the whole family during the month of May.

James Dooley, entrepreneur at Soft Surfaces, shares some free, kid-friendly days out for UK kids (and their parents) in the blossoming month of May.

Playgrounds And Parks

One of the best free options for kids in May is to visit local playgrounds and parks. These outdoor spaces offer a chance for children to burn off energy, explore their surroundings, and engage in imaginative play.

James says, ‘In London, the Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens is a popular destination, featuring a pirate ship-themed play area and a sensory trail. In the North West, the Heaton Park in Manchester boasts a large playground, a boating lake, and a miniature railway.’

Museums And Galleries

Many UK museums and galleries offer free admission, making them an excellent choice for a day out with the kids.

‘In the South East, the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne features interactive exhibits and workshops that encourage children to explore their creativity. In the Midlands, the Lapworth Museum of Geology in Birmingham allows young visitors to discover the wonders of the natural world through hands-on activities and displays,’ James notes.

Nature Reserves And Wildlife Parks

Exploring the great outdoors is another fantastic free option for families in May. In the South West, the Durlston Country Park in Dorset offers stunning coastal views and opportunities to spot a variety of wildlife, such as seabirds and butterflies. In the North East, the Saltholme Wildlife Reserve in Teesside provides a peaceful haven for nature lovers, with walking trails and bird-watching hides.

Historical Sites And Landmarks

Many of the UK’s historical sites and landmarks are free to visit, offering a chance to learn about the country’s rich heritage.

‘In Wales, Caerphilly Castle in South Wales is a well-preserved mediaeval fortress that children can explore, while in Scotland, Stirling Castle in Stirlingshire boasts impressive architecture and stunning views,’ James says.

Whether it’s exploring the great outdoors, discovering the wonders of art and culture, or delving into the past, there is something for every family to enjoy in the UK this May – without breaking the bank!
