Squeezing the whole family into a confined space can create tension and increase the likelihood of fallouts, especially when it comes to younger children. As a result, the majority (57%) of UK parents worry about tantrums when embarking on a long journey.
To combat this, parents are making sure they pack all the necessary essentials and many have found their tactics to help keep everyone calm. According to a recent study of UK parents, making sure the car is stocked with snacks is the most important factor for 28%, with one parent specifying it needs to be a bag of toffees.
So, to help worried parents keep their journeys calm and fallout-free, mother and baby retailer JoJo Maman Bébé has partnered with registered therapist Danny Zane from North London Therapy to share tips on preventing arguments, and how to tackle them if they do arise.
Car journey essentials according to parents:
When asked what their car journey essentials are, after snacks, the most important car necessities for 21% of parents were electronic devices, while a further fifth (20%) said music. Fourth place (15%) is awarded for ensuring a good drinks supply, while just 4% said toys.
UK parents have also admitted that watching films is no longer a reliable tactic with only 3% stating this worked whilst packing spare clothes received the same amount of votes.
Fallouts during long car journeys can indicate underlying tension:
Danny explains: “Long car journeys can cause family fallouts because everyone is in close proximity to each other, facing prolonged interaction. Stress factors such as boredom, fatigue, and cramped spaces can heighten tensions.
“Differences in preferences can contribute to clashes, such as music choices or pit stop timings while the lack of personal space can magnify minor irritations, creating a challenging environment.
“Siblings arguing in the car can indicate underlying tensions or unresolved issues. It may also reflect differences in personalities, stress from the journey, or the need for attention.”
Expert therapists top five ways to prevent car journey fallouts:
- Consider travel time – “Travelling early in the morning or late evening can be less stressful for families, as children are usually more rested and sleepy.”
- Plan ahead – “Establish clear rules and expectations before the journey, encouraging open communication, and providing engaging activities to keep children occupied.”
- Take regular breaks – “Set aside time for stretching and snacks, this can help to reduce tension and promote a more harmonious trip for everyone in the car.”
- Pack a variety of entertainment and essentials – “Snacks, water, travel pillows, and blankets are a great place to start. While, books, games, audiobooks and, depending on their age, handheld devices can help keep children engaged.”
- Be prepared for emergencies – “It’s wise to travel with a first-aid kit and necessary medications in case of an emergency.”
Diffuse the situation post-argument by acknowledging everyone’s emotions and keeping calm:
“If an argument has taken place, parents can calmly intervene by acknowledging the feelings of both children without taking sides, encouraging siblings to express their viewpoints helps to validate their emotions. Suggest a brief pause for everyone to cool down, followed by a conversation to resolve the issue.
“I’d suggest reinforcing positive communication and conflict resolution strategies. Examples of positive communication strategies include active listening, using ‘I’ statements, and maintaining a calm tone. Conflict resolution strategies involve finding common ground, compromising, and coming up with solutions collaboratively to address issues.”
Remain positive during unexpected disruptions:
“Parents should try to remain calm and patient during disruptions. Keep the children entertained with games or storytelling, and ensure snacks and drinks are accessible. Use the time to discuss the journey or to play music to maintain a positive atmosphere.
“Remaining calm and positive in front of children during delays helps to reduce their anxiety and stress. Children often mirror adult emotions, a composed demeanour can create a sense of security, teaching them resilience and encouraging adaptive coping strategies in frustrating situations.”
Five clothing items that can prevent car journey fallouts:
As comfort is key when it comes to staying calm, the experts at JoJo Maman Bébé have shared five clothing items that can help to prevent tantrums.
- Zip up hoodies or cardigans – “Fluctuations in temperature means it’s essential children can remove and add layers of clothing themselves – or for a parent to help with when making a stop at the services. Opt for clothing that can be unfastened easily like cardigans and zip-up hoodies.”
- Slip-off shoes – “Wearing shoes can be uncomfortable and lead to frustration, choose a style that can be easily slipped off without requiring laces to be untied, or make sure they’re undone before the journey begins.”
- Soft fabrics – “Avoid itchy or rough fabrics to prevent any upset or tantrums starting.”
- Stretchy waistband bottoms – “To keep everyone happy during long journeys, clothing should be super flexible and adaptive. Opt for loose-fitting tops and stretchy waistbands to avoid any discomfort or pressure points.”
- Bibs or snack-proof clothing – “Make sure you pack bibs or a spare change of clothing in case snacks turn into spillages and accidents.”
