Discover the UK’s Most Scenic Overnight Stays

New research has revealed that travellers are increasingly looking for those picture-perfect locations to wake up to whether it’s a misty mountains or chocolate-box villages as social media continues to influence holiday choices.

Dave Williams, managing director at Kent motorhome company Choose Leisure, has shared his top tips for discovering the most scenic overnight spots in the UK, following analysis of the country’s most Instagrammed destinations.

“Waking up surrounded by some of Britain’s most stunning natural landscapes, from the rugged coastlines of Cornwall to the tranquil lakes of the Lake District, offers a unique chance to reconnect with nature and recharge,” says Dave. “But finding that perfect spot takes a little planning and the right location can turn an ordinary stopover into something truly memorable.”

Dave’s top 6 tips for finding the perfect place to wake up

Chase the sunrise

The most rewarding views often come first thing in the morning. Lakesides, coastal lookouts and open valleys give you front-row seats to incredible sunrises that transform the whole landscape. Use sunrise maps or apps to plan your stopover around the direction of the light and don’t forget to bring your camera.

Seek peace and quiet

Nothing ruins a night under the stars like noisy roads or bright lights. Low light and noise pollution are essential for a restful night and a calm start to the day. Look for remote countryside lay-bys, forest clearings or coastal car parks set back from busy areas to maximise both sleep and scenery.

Arrive before dark

Turning up late means missing out on the best spots. Arrive before sunset so you can choose a level, sheltered pitch, check your surroundings, and enjoy a relaxed evening. You’ll wake up to a view you’ve already picked, rather than discovering in the morning that you’re parked facing a hedge.

Know the local rules

Not every beauty spot allows overnight stays. Many areas require permits, while some restrict motorhome parking altogether. Always research in advance and check signs on arrival. Respecting the rules not only protects the landscape but also helps keep wild camping welcomed by local communities.

Add a walking route

The best spots don’t just look good from your window; they put you right on the doorstep of adventure. Choose locations close to trails, beaches, or viewpoints so you can step straight out into nature. Morning walks are often the quietest, with wildlife and scenery at their best.

Use the right tools

There are now countless apps and forums dedicated to sharing overnight stopovers, from hidden bays to mountain passes. Trusted resources like Park4Night or local motorhome Facebook groups can point you to tried-and-tested spots with up-to-date advice. Combine digital research with old-fashioned maps for the best results.
