The Butter Candle Trend Explained

butter candles

TikTok has become a go-to platform for discovering new and innovative foodie hacks, and the latest trend captivating users is the intriguing “Butter Candle”. This unique idea involves crafting candles out of melted butter and using it as a dip for bread as the candle slowly melts. Not only is this trend a visually appealing addition to the dining table, but also a fun interactive experience for guests.

Taking it a step further, users are experimenting with their own flavours, infusing their butter candles with aromatic herbs like thyme and rosemary or sage.

However, while this trend is undoubtedly fun and innovative, food experts from meal kit delivery service HelloFresh have highlighted potential pitfalls. They caution that creating these butter candles at home may not be as straightforward as it seems in the viral videos.

Mimi Morley, Senior Recipe Development Manager at HelloFresh comments,

“As with many viral hacks, it’s important to approach the butter candle trend with caution. While they are undeniably simple to make and add a striking visual element to your dining table, especially when placed at the centre of a crusty loaf, there are some practical considerations.

“If you’re tempted to try this trend yourself, it’s crucial to ensure that you use a food-safe wick. These are readily available online, but the type of wick used isn’t always clearly mentioned in these TikTok videos. Using a non-food-safe wick could introduce harmful chemicals or materials to the melted butter, potentially making it unsafe to consume.

“In addition, it’s a good idea to research how to properly secure the wick within the butter to ensure it burns evenly and safely. Without the right setup, you might end up with an unevenly melting candle or, worse, a wick that extinguishes too quickly.”

Tips for making the viral “Butter Candle” at home

Mimi shares her top tips for making butter candles at home.

“Start by choosing a high-end, unsalted butter, which allows you to control the seasoning if you decide to add herbs and spices. If you do, consider adding finely chopped rosemary, thyme or even a touch of garlic for a savoury flavour.

“Gently melt the butter on a medium heat, stirring occasionally until it’s thoroughly melted. Be careful to not let it burn or brown by overheating. Next, secure the wick in a mould–a paper cup will do–and carefully pour over the melted butter. Refrigerate for a few hours until the candle is firm and holding its shape. Peel away the mould, or cut away the paper cup to reveal your candle creation.

“To use your butter candle, start by cutting a hole in the centre of your loaf of bread that is the same size as the candle. Gently place the butter candle inside the hole, making sure it fits snugly and is securely in place. Once it’s positioned, light the wick and watch as the butter begins to melt. Tear off pieces of bread and dip them into the melted butter.”
