From Coffee to Calm: Why Searches for L-Theanine Have Surged 113% This Year
Feeling. co-founder Kiera Lawlor explains the rise of the “focus without the crash” supplement
As the wellness world moves away from jitter-inducing caffeine fixes, a new hero ingredient is taking centre stage — L-Theanine. According to new Google search data, analysed by the team at feeling., monthly searches for the amino acid have soared by 113% in the past year, with more than 756,000 people Googling it last month alone.
So, what is L-Theanine, and why is everyone suddenly talking about it?
L-Theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid found in green tea leaves and certain mushrooms. It’s best known for promoting relaxation without causing drowsiness, helping to take the “edge” off stress and anxiety while improving mental focus — a balance that’s particularly appealing to those looking to cut back on caffeine or cope with high-stress lifestyles.

“We’re seeing a real shift towards calm energy rather than chaotic energy,” says Kiera Lawlor, co-founder of Feeling, the transdermal energy patch brand designed for steady, sustained focus.
“People are tired of the caffeine rollercoaster. L-Theanine gives you that focused alertness — the kind that helps you get through your workday, gym session, or even your commute — without the anxiety spike or crash.”
Often taken in capsule or powder form, or paired with caffeine in energy products and nootropics, L-Theanine works by increasing levels of GABA, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which help regulate mood, concentration, and sleep.
And while it’s been a staple in biohacker and wellness circles for years, TikTok has accelerated its mainstream popularity. The hashtag #LTheanine has now amassed millions of views, with users sharing how it helps them stay calm during stressful meetings, boosts focus while studying, or even supports better sleep.
“It’s a reflection of where wellness is heading,” adds Kiera. “People want smarter, more balanced ways to boost energy — and ingredients like L-Theanine are leading that movement.”
