Maximalism is having a major moment in the interior design world. In fact, Google searches for “maximalism decor” have increased by more than 5,000% across the UK in the last 30 days.
Not only that, but it’s clear that interior design experts are putting their own spin on this eclectic style as Pinterest searches for “vintage maximalism” are up 200% in the last week.
Maximalism embraces an abundance of colour, patterns and fabrics to create an eclectic look. Whereas its counterpart, minimalism, embodies simplistic designs with clean lines, natural fabrics and soft beige, white and cream colours.
“Maximalism can be a bold style to master, but when done right, it strikes a beautiful balance of colour, pattern, and texture to create a space that feels curated, not chaotic,” says Alex Francis, interior design expert from Comodo Living. “If you’re ready to embrace maximalism in your home, start by transforming one room and experimenting with different styles until you find what feels right for you.”
When it comes to your bedroom, Alex highlights some top tips for mastering the maximalism trend.

Start with a neutral base
When planning your maximalist decor, Alex recommends starting with a neutral focal point such as a stylish upholstered bed in a soft beige or cream colour. This way as your style evolves, your most important piece of furniture will remain timeless.
This also allows you to experiment with different colours to complement your standout bed frame. For a warm and cosy feel, opt for Terracotta or olive green. On the other hand, if you envision a bold atmosphere, choose navy blues, emerald greens or metallics such as gold.
Layering patterns
Alex suggests that one of the most effective ways to incorporate the maximalist trend into your home is through carefully selected patterns and textures to help bring the space to life.
For example, merging different floral patterns through bedding, curtains and rugs, and layering with rich fabrics such as velvet, boucle or satin, can create the vibrant, lived-in look which is synonymous with the maximalism style.
Adding pops of colour
While maximalism is recognised for its wealth of colours, Alex suggests that adding subtle pops throughout your bedroom can have the same, if not a more sophisticated effect. Firstly, consider key focal points in your bedroom, such as a desk or bookshelf. Adding ornaments to these pieces of furniture with pops of complementary colours can help to draw the eye and create a dynamic look.

When it comes to choosing the perfect colours, Alex recommends considering which shades you envision in your space. Whether that’s bright, vibrant hues or darker colours such as forest green, burgundy and navy, which are often used to achieve the dark maximalism style.
Finishing touches
When it comes to the finishing touches, add functionality and style to your maximalist space through coat hooks and picture frames. Add layered throws or decorative pillows and subtle lighting such as candles or table lamps to create an inviting bedroom space.
Go one step further and add colourful plants to your bedroom. Whether that’s through wall mounted planters, hanging baskets and vases filled with fresh flowers, these finishing touches help to refresh and bring life to your space.
Not only will this help you to achieve the comforting eclecticism of the maximalist theme, some experts even say that plants such as lavender, Aloe Vera or snake plants can help promote better sleep when featured in your bedroom.
