With colder temperatures predicted across much of the UK in the coming weeks, not taking steps to prepare your outdoor space for more inclement weather could cause damage and bring added costs in the future.
So, to help you prepare your outdoor spaces, the experts at Stone Superstore have compiled some top tips to make sure when spring comes around again, you’ll be ready to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
Clean and Store Outdoor Furniture
Start by thoroughly cleaning your outdoor furniture. Remove dirt, leaves, and any mildew. Consider reapplying a protective finish or coating for wooden furniture to prevent moisture damage. Store lightweight and portable furniture, such as chairs and cushions, indoors or in a shed or garage to protect them from harsh winter weather.
Protect and Cover Furniture
Invest in quality outdoor furniture covers for larger and bulkier furniture items like tables and benches. These covers will shield your furniture from rain, snow, and freezing temperatures. Make sure they are secured properly to prevent wind from blowing them off.
Prune and Mulch Your Garden
Trim back overgrown or dead branches on trees and shrubs to prevent them from breaking under the weight of snow or ice. Pruning also encourages healthy growth in the spring.
Apply a layer of mulch around the base of trees and plants to insulate the roots and help regulate soil temperature during winter.
Drain and Cover Water Features
If you have outdoor water features like fountains or birdbaths, make sure to drain them completely. Water can freeze and expand, potentially damaging the structure. For larger water features, consider covering them with a tarp or special winter cover to prevent snow and ice from accumulating.
Clean and Seal Outdoor Tiles & Stone Paving Slabs
Avoid using harsh chemicals that can strip away sealants or damage the tiles. Instead, use a gentle, pH-neutral cleaner designed for outdoor use. Try to refrain from using salt or chemical de-icers on outdoor tiles too, as they can corrode the surface and cause discolouration.
Fix any cracks
Inspect your tiles for any existing cracks or chips. Repair these issues before winter to prevent further water infiltration, as freezing and thawing cycles can exacerbate existing damage.
Molly Woodward-Moor, creative director at Stone Superstore added: “Protecting outdoor tiles during the winter is crucial to prevent damage and maintain their longevity.”
“Try to keep your outdoor tiles free of leaves, dirt, and debris as wet leaves can promote the growth of mould and mildew, which can lead to staining. Avoid using wire brushes or abrasive scouring pads, as they can scratch and damage the surface of your tiles.”
