In light of National Picnic Month, a new tourism experience has put together its top stunning spots perfect for soaking up the sun.
This Summer, Route YC is calling for tourists to the Yorkshire Coast to celebrate the season by highlighting some of the most picture-perfect spots across its rugged coastline.
From sand and pebble beaches to cliffside sunset spots and breath-taking waterfalls, the Yorkshire coast has it all!
Choose a quiet place to lay down your blanket and dig into your sandwiches away from the main tourist destinations or listen to the sound of crashing waves on the beach. Take a peek at these perfect picnic spots:
1. Falling Foss
May Beck and Falling Foss are Whitby’s best kept secrets. Surrounded by nature and a feeling of tranquillity, a picnic can be enjoyed besides the 30ft waterfall under a canopy of lush, green trees, spilling into the brook below. Paddle in May Beck’s shallow trickling waters to sooth tired feet or explore the historical ‘Hermitage’, a dwelling carved out of a large rock where a Hermit once lived in the 18th Century!
2. Ravenscar Beach
For panoramic sights while you snack, head to Ravenscar’s rugged coastal path and luxurious gardens, or head down to the rocky beach coves which are a great place for fossil hunting and even seal spotting!
3. Robin Hood’s Bay
No trip to Whitby is complete without experiencing the picturesque fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay. Sit on the grassy cliffside and enjoy a colourful sunset (or sunrise for the early risers) for a perfect picnic, then enjoy a walk on the winding cobbled streets that run through the village and grab a pint or a hot drink from a local pub or café. But don’t forget your walking boots!
4. Hornsea Mere
Hornsea Mere is Yorkshire’s largest natural freshwater lake. A great spot to watch the still waters and get away from busy, noisy areas. You can even take your picnic on a rowing boat! Or try out something new once you’ve lined your stomach and quenched your thirst, by having a go at sailing!
5. Lovers’ Rock
Head to Hayburn Wyke’s pebble and boulder beach to enjoy your picnic alongside a meandering track with a cascading dual waterfall at the bottom of the track. Positioned between the waterfall and shoreline, you’ll find a large, sofa-shaped boulder on the beach known as ‘lovers’ rock’. The ideal selfie-spot or perfect seat if you want to rest your legs or dig into your snacks.
6. Scarborough North Bay Beach
If you don’t mind getting sandy toes and windswept hair, take a walk down to Scarborough’s North Bay Beach which has a distinctly wilder feel than the more commercialised South Bay. If you want to set up your picnic on the beach itself or do some rock pooling, make sure to check tide times before you visit.
