Easter escapes: Europe’s top spots for a spring getaway

easter getaway

This year why not swap chocolate for travel and enjoy an Easter getaway? What better way to enjoy the milder spring temperatures than a European break? Rosie Panter, travel expert at the UK’s trusted travel price comparison site, dealchecker, shares her guide to some of Europe’s most spectacular Easter celebrations that make ideal destinations for a last-minute getaway.

“Easter is one of the biggest events of the calendar year for many European countries and locals go all out to celebrate in style. Whether it’s exploding carts outside the Duomo in Florence, or fiestas in the streets of Sevilla, there is so much to experience.

“If you haven’t yet booked your trip, don’t panic. There’s still time to snap up a bargain break just make sure to do your research. It really does pay to be flexible on destination, dates and flight times.”

Rosie’s top picks for Easter in Europe below…

  • Explosive traditions: Chios, Greece

Head to the picturesque Greek island of Chios and swap Easter eggs for fireworks!

‘Rouketopolemos’ is a tradition where rival churches fire rounds of fireworks at each other.

This Orthodox Greek tradition dates back to the Ottoman Empire and has grown year on year since, with hundreds, if not thousands of sparkly firework rockets pelted from church to church, lighting up the sky with dazzling gold sparkles.

One for the thrill seekers, this is a true spectacle and has to be seen to be believed.

  • Budget-friendly beauty: Craoiva, Romania

Romanescu Park, located in the heart of Craoiva is known as one of the prettiest parks in Europe. Come Easter it becomes a hub of light, with over 130,000 glittering bulbs lit throughout its 100 hectares.

Perfect for families, the destination also boasts markets, a zoo and even an ‘enchanted castle’.

Flights to Romania are lower than average at this time of year, so it’s also a budget friendly option.

  • Sangria in the sun: Sevilla, Spain

Averaging around 24 degrees at Easter, Sevilla, southern Spain, is a sure fire choice for those seeking a break from grey and drizzly Britain. What could be a better way to enjoy Easter fiestas than Spanish blue skies and a jug of sangria with friends?

Semana Santa, or ‘Holy Week’ is one of the most important fiestas in the Catholic calendar, and Sevilla celebrates in style. Expect streets lined by ‘hermanades y confridias’ and jubilant crowds parading throughout the city.

Come evening, take your pick of the local bars for sundowners and tapas.

  • A wagonload of fireworks: Florence, Italy

Florence undoubtedly boasts some of Europe’s most beautiful architecture, but the city also has one of the more unique approaches to celebrating Easter.

The ‘Scoppio del Carro’ or the explosion of the cart takes place every year on Easter Sunday and dates back over 350 years. An elaborate wagon built in 1622 and standing two stories high is pulled by two oxen through the streets, before being delivered to the Archbishop of Florence in front of the Duomo, where it’s lit. Expect a truly astonishing firework display!

Florence is well known for its fantastic food, so if you’re hoping to enjoy a traditional Easter lunch it’s worth booking ahead.

  • A romantic Easter escape: Vienna, Austria

Looking for an Easter break to inspire romance? Head to Vienna.

Easily one of the most beautiful destinations at any time of the year, expect Easter markets dotted throughout the city, artfully decorated eggs and culinary treats.

The Easter market at Schönbrunn Palace is easily one of the most romantic spots. What better way to enjoy quality time with your loved one than by strolling through the grounds of this Baroque palace whilst listening to live jazz music.
