A popular family holiday hotspot, Devon is well-known for its breathtaking coastline, spectacular beaches, and national parks.
Whether it’s a refreshing seaside stroll, or a trip exploring the nature-rich woodlands, there is something suited for the whole family this spring.
Here, local experts Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays, have provided their top five walks perfect for a bank holiday stroll in Devon.
Heddons Mouth
Distance: 2 miles
Route: Starting at the National Trust gift shop, you’ll find a gentle 2-mile stroll on level terrain through woodland and riverside paths. Make sure to keep an eye out for spring lambs in the surrounding fields.
You’ll then reach a secluded beach, shadowed by the cliffs of Heddon’s Mouth. Retrace your steps back through the streams and head to the car park for an ice cream and a refreshment on the way out.
Froward Point
Distance: 2 miles
Route: A perfect walk for history buffs, Froward Point was originally built during World War 2 to access a nearby gun emplacement.
Starting at Brownstone car park, the walk provides magnificent views of the coastline and over Mewstone, with dedicated viewing points along the way perfect for small picnic breaks.
Baggy Point Easy Access Walk
Distance: 2.5 miles
Route: Step into Spring with a walk along the west coast, starting at the Baggy Point car park before making your way up the coastline to experience stunning sea views. Look out for the whale bones and bring some binoculars to see if you can spot wild seals.
The walk will take you to the headland where you can take a break surrounded by nature – retrace your steps back to the car park to see it all again!
Salcombe Hill Circular Walk
Distance: 5 miles
Route: Starting and ending at the Salcombe Hill car park, stroll along the coastline and take in the sea views of Weston Beach and Branscombe, before turning inland through a vast wooded valley surrounded by nature, perfect for a makeshift egg hunt.
Open 7 days a week, and arguably the best part, you can even stop at the Donkey Sanctuary that houses hundreds of donkeys and take an optional stroll with the animals before heading back to Salcombe Hill.
Queens Drive to Sand Bay
Distance: 3 miles
Route: Perfect for a walk on the seafront with the kids, this trail on Exmouth Beach has incredible views and is perfect for spectating or joining in on water sports. Bring a spring hamper and enjoy a picnic with a few chocolate treats whilst taking in the stunning views of Sandy Bay. For dog lovers, make your way to the end of Queens Drive, where dogs can enjoy the golden sands alongside the rest of the family.
