As we approach Valentine’s Day, social media will often be inundated with people showing a public display of love and affection for their partners, as they celebrate their love on the most romantic day of the year. However, whilst it might all be sunshine and rainbows for their followers, plenty of couples are keeping some secrets beneath the sheets.
New research, conducted by Haypp, has found that almost one in five (18%) British couples are now sleeping separately from their partner for at least three out of seven days a week and a huge 73% of British couples admitted that bedroom habits have been a catalyst for many arguments with their partner. So, whilst there are plenty of bad habits that grind Brits’ gears, which ones are the worst and cause the most friction between the sheets?
Eating toast in bed has been revealed as the number one bad habit for Brits in the bedroom. In fact, a massive 88% of those surveyed admitted that crumbs between the sheets is a no go for them, and would definitely cause problems in the bedroom with a partner too.
Closely following behind is snoring, as 86% of Brits admitted to finding this habit one of the worst in the bedroom. It’s no surprise that this bad bedroom habit is leading to some tensions in British households as it can often mean a lack of sleep for partners who unfortunately have to endure it throughout the night.
For those that still smoke indoors, taking cigarettes into the bedroom was a serious issue for British couples, as three quarters (75%) of those surveyed find the habit unbearable in the bedroom. And it’s bad news for people with several mugs and loose items left on the bedside table – it’s time to break the hoarding habit and clear your corner as 70% of Brits admitted that they get the ‘ick’ over a dirty bedside table.
The top 10 worst bedroom habits are:
- Eating toast in bed- 88%
- Snoring – 86%
- Smoking – 75%
- Dirty bedside table – 70%
- Not making the bed – 65%
- Having pets in the bed- 63%
- Not changing the sheets regularly – 52%
- Setting multiple alarms – 43%
- Sitting on the bed with trainers on – 20%
- Not showering before bed – 15%
Markus Lindblad, from Haypp, said: “We conducted this research to find out what habits are the worst for Brits when it comes to the bedroom. It’s surprising to see smoking in the top three, as it indicates that many smokers are continuing the habit into the bedroom. Whether it’s nicotine pouches or gum, smokers should be educating themselves on the alternatives that are available to them, that are more discrete and don’t harm those around them. Not only will the swap to other alternatives benefit those around them, but they will also benefit them too. In fact, new research found that 95% of smokers felt better after changing to nicotine pouches.
“It’s been interesting to see that snoring has been overtaken by eating toast in bed – as the biggest pet peeve for Brits, when it comes to bedroom habits. No one likes to sleep in dirty sheets and perhaps crumbs beneath the sheets has been the catalyst for many arguments across UK households. Snoring is still the second most irritating habit for Brits, so even with all the new products on the market helping Brits with their snoring habits, it still seems to be a problem amongst many Brits. Interestingly, these top two pet peeves may also be causing a serious lack of sleep for Brits making us very cranky the next day.”
