The Foods Experts Say You Should Avoid While Taking Wegovy or Mounjaro

Pharmacists Reveal the Worst Foods to Eat While Taking Wegovy or Mounjaro

Weight-loss injections such as Wegovy and Mounjaro are rapidly changing the conversation around obesity, appetite and long-term weight management in the UK.

As prescriptions continue rising and more patients gain access through the NHS, many people are now asking the same question: what should you actually eat while taking these medications?

Although Wegovy and Mounjaro are designed to help regulate appetite and reduce food intake, experts warn that eating the wrong foods while taking them can dramatically worsen side effects such as nausea, bloating, acid reflux and vomiting.

According to Tarun Kumar, diet can make a significant difference to how people tolerate GLP-1 medications.

“Wegovy and Mounjaro contain a GLP-1 receptor agonist — a synthetic hormone that slows down how quickly food leaves the stomach,” he explained. “While these medications can be very effective for weight loss, they can also come with digestive side effects that become worse depending on what people eat.”

Why Certain Foods Feel Worse on GLP-1 Medications

One of the main ways GLP-1 medications work is by slowing gastric emptying, meaning food remains in the stomach for longer.

This helps people feel fuller for longer and reduces appetite — but it also means certain foods become much harder to digest comfortably.

Experts say this is why many users experience nausea, bloating, acid reflux or stomach discomfort when eating foods that are particularly greasy, spicy or heavily processed.

And according to pharmacists, the foods people are most likely to crave as comfort foods are often the exact foods that trigger the worst side effects.

Fried and Greasy Foods Are One of the Biggest Triggers

Tarun Kumar says greasy foods are among the worst offenders for people taking Wegovy or Mounjaro.

Fast food burgers, fried chicken, doughnuts, fish and chips and oily takeaway meals can sit heavily in the stomach for prolonged periods while on GLP-1 medications, significantly increasing digestive discomfort.

“Because the medication already slows down stomach emptying, greasy foods remain in the digestive system even longer,” he explained. “This can trigger nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and intense heartburn.”

Some users even report symptoms after eating relatively small amounts of fried food.

Experts therefore recommend choosing lighter cooking methods such as baking, poaching or grilling instead.

Spicy Foods May Worsen Acid Reflux and Nausea

While spicy foods are often viewed as healthy flavour boosters, pharmacists say they can become surprisingly difficult to tolerate while taking weight-loss injections.

Spices may irritate the digestive tract and intensify acid reflux, which many GLP-1 users already experience due to slower digestion.

Although some NHS healthy eating advice encourages replacing salt with spices for flavour, Tarun Kumar says this may not work well for people taking medications like Wegovy or Mounjaro.

Instead, he recommends using gentler flavourings such as fresh herbs, lemongrass and ginger to create flavour without worsening gastrointestinal symptoms.

Ultra-Processed Foods May Leave Users Feeling Worse

Experts also warn that ultra-processed foods can become particularly problematic while taking GLP-1 medications.

Crisps, processed meats, biscuits and packaged snacks are often low in nutrients while being difficult to digest and easy to overeat.

According to Tarun Kumar, relying too heavily on these foods may contribute to fatigue, low energy and nutrient deficiencies while losing weight.

“Many ultra-processed foods lack important nutrients such as vitamins, iron, magnesium and zinc,” he explained. “This may contribute to symptoms such as tiredness, hair thinning or poor skin health.”

Instead, experts recommend focusing on fresh, nutrient-rich foods that support digestion and hydration.

Even Healthy Foods Can Sometimes Cause Problems

Interestingly, pharmacists say even some traditionally healthy foods may trigger discomfort if eaten excessively while on GLP-1 medications.

High-fibre foods such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, celery, pineapple and unpeeled apples can sometimes worsen bloating and digestive discomfort due to their fibre content and slower digestion.

This does not mean people should avoid vegetables entirely — but moderation and portion control may become more important while adjusting to the medication.

Protein and Hydration Become Increasingly Important

One of the biggest concerns surrounding rapid weight loss is the potential loss of muscle mass alongside body fat.

Experts therefore stress the importance of maintaining adequate protein intake while taking Wegovy or Mounjaro.

Foods such as baked fish, eggs, cottage cheese, wholegrains and unsalted seeds are often recommended because they provide protein without the heaviness of processed or greasy foods.

Hydration is equally important. Because nausea, vomiting and reduced appetite may increase dehydration risk, pharmacists encourage patients to drink fluids consistently throughout the day, particularly drinks containing electrolytes.

“Small, regular sips are usually easier to tolerate,” Tarun Kumar explained.

Smaller Portions May Be the Key to Managing Side Effects

According to experts, many people experience fewer side effects when they avoid overeating and instead focus on smaller, balanced meals.

For users who accidentally overindulge, pharmacists recommend staying upright after eating, drinking ginger tea and getting fresh air rather than lying down immediately.

As the popularity of GLP-1 medications continues growing, healthcare professionals say education around nutrition will become increasingly important alongside the medication itself.

While Wegovy and Mounjaro may help regulate appetite, experts stress that long-term success still depends heavily on sustainable eating habits, hydration and overall lifestyle choices.
