Tom Revill, Creative Director at Plank Hardware said: “We believe that your living space plays a key role in your wellbeing and how you feel on a day-to-day basis. It’s not just about the physical structure, it’s about how you design it and utilise it. When you pay attention to creating a comfortable, inviting space – you’re essentially nurturing your mind.
“We’re passionate about creating spaces that not only promote positivity, but also creativity. Now, people spend more time than ever at home with the rise of working from home, this is why we’ve got the experts on board ahead of International Day of Happiness.”
Plank Hardware partnered with Dr Becky Spelman, Psychologist and Founder at Private Therapy Clinic and Priya Sher, Feng Shui Consultant to look at interior design projects scientifically proven to promote mental health and wellbeing.
Dr Becky said, “Interior design plays a significant role in influencing our mood and mental health, and colours, lighting, and layout can impact our emotions and wellbeing. A well-designed space can bring relaxation and productivity, while a cluttered or poorly organised environment may lead to stress, anxiety and communication issues.”
Priya Sher, Feng Shui Consultant said, “Feng Shui aims to cultivate a deeper connection between us and our space. When we are more aware of the impact our surroundings have on us, it encourages us to be more mindful of how we look after our space. At the core of Feng Shui is creating balance and harmony and thus it can contribute to improving our mental health.
“By optimising the layout of a space and promoting positive energy flow through calming colours, natural elements, placement of furniture, plants and mirrors we can optimise the energy of a space, when ‘qi’ flows smoothly it results in creating a relaxing vibe and enhanced mood.”
Seven interior design projects proven to improve your mood and wellbeing
- Colour drenching
It’s important to consider your colour scheme. Dr Becky said, “Soft blues, greens, or neutrals can improve mood and wellbeing as they are known to evoke feelings of tranquillity and relaxation.”
Tom added, “‘Colour drenching’ is the process of choosing one colour and using it across multiple surfaces in one space, such as your walls, the ceiling, furniture and even textiles. By colour drenching your interiors, you create immediate impact upon entry and a cohesive, immersive space in which to live within that promotes happiness. It also makes your styling decisions much easier.”
- Add mirrors throughout your home for bouncing off natural light
Tom said, “Mirrors reflect natural light, making rooms appear brighter and more spacious. Exposure to natural light is known to elevate mood and boost energy levels. Well-lit spaces with ample light are also visually appealing and can create a sense of openness and airness.”
- Bring the outdoors inside
Tom added, “Incorporate indoor plants to bring nature indoors. Plants not only improve air quality but also have been shown to reduce stress levels and boost mood. Other natural materials, such as warm woods and cork for flooring, help create a calming and earthy space.”
Dr Becky said, “Natural elements such as real plants and natural light can enhance our connection to nature, which has been shown to reduce stress and improve mental health. Aim to create a space that is peaceful and inviting.”
- Add decorative lamps to create ambient lighting
Tom said, “Decorative lamps can help set the mood and ambiance of a room, promoting relaxation and comfort. Soft, diffused lighting can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, which can be calming on the mind and reduce stress levels.
- Introduce colourful hardware to your kitchen cabinetry
Tom said, “Adding colourful hardware to your kitchen cabinetry can provide visual stimulation and interest in the space. Vibrant colours can evoke feelings of happiness, which can have a positive impact on mood and wellbeing. It’s a great way to show personal expression, most people tend to stick to classic neutrals so it’s a great way to inject some personality into your kitchen.”
- Clutter free space
Dr Becky said, “When aiming to improve mood through interior design, try to avoid cluttered or chaotic spaces, harsh lighting, and overwhelming colour schemes. These can contribute to stress and anxiety, hindering efforts to create a calm within the home.”
Tom added, “Hooks can help declutter and make the most of your wall space. Take your entryway for example, hooks are great for smart storage. Add shiplap panelling, a bench and some shelving to create a practical and stress-free space, even on the busy mornings.”
Priya continued, “By arranging your space in a harmonious and clutter-free manner, Feng Shui can create an environment that encourages a peaceful atmosphere and can help alleviate anxiety and promote a sense of calm and mental clarity.”
