The viral phenomenon of #PerfumeTok has made “dupes” (cheaper copies of high-end scents) more popular than ever, with many users claiming they’re “better” than the designer originals.
However, a fragrance expert is warning that while a copy may smell identical on the initial spray, a single chemical difference is the reason the experience and the cost will never be the same.
Hetan Soni, a fragrance expert at Perfume Essence, explains why that initial burst of similarity can be misleading and how the dupe is actually cheating the customer:
“The biggest myth on TikTok is that a £30 dupe is ‘just as good’ as a £300 original. On the first spray, it might be 95% similar because fragrance chemistry allows us to copy top notes very cheaply. However, the true cost of a perfume is in the fixatives and premium base molecules used to control its lifespan.”
“Dupes cheat the dry-down process; they don’t have the sophisticated scaffolding needed to make the scent last, meaning you lose the rich base notes and the performance of the fragrance within an hour or two. You end up having to re-spray multiple times a day, meaning that ‘cheap’ bottle actually runs out far faster.”
This is the one chemical difference that causes the dramatic drop-off in performance:
- The original: Uses high-concentration, costly fixatives (often natural extracts or highly refined synthetic molecules) that bind the top and heart notes to the skin and release them slowly and consistently for 8 to 12 hours. This creates the “evolution” of the scent.
- The dupe: Uses common, cheaper fixatives or simply a higher ratio of inexpensive alcohol. This forces the perfume’s entire structure (top, heart, and base notes) to evaporate all at once. It smells the same initially, but it disappears rapidly, often within one to two hours.
How to tell a true quality fragrance
According experts, you can test a fragrance’s quality regardless of the price tag by focusing on its scent structure, known as its “notes“
- Top notes: The initial impression (usually citrus, light, and fresh). These should last around 5 to 15 minutes.
- Heart notes: The “body” of the scent (florals, spices). These should emerge smoothly and last for 3 to 4 hours.
- Base Notes: The lingering, heavy foundation (musk, wood, vanilla). These should still be detectable 8+ hours later.
A quality fragrance will transition smoothly through these phases. A dupe, lacking quality fixatives, will often jump straight to a diluted base note after the top notes quickly disappear.
Extra tips: Making your investment last
- Avoid the ‘blind buy’: Never buy a fragrance, original or dupe, based only on the initial spray. Ask for a sample and wear it for a full day to check the all-important dry-down (base note longevity).
- Layer correctly: If you want to boost the performance of a lighter scent, apply a simple unscented body oil or cream to your pulse points before you spray. This gives the fragrance oils a much better surface to cling to, mechanically extending the lifespan.
- Keep it cool: To protect the integrity of the expensive fixatives, always store your perfumes in a cool, dark place (never a bathroom or on a sunny shelf), as heat and light break down the complex molecules over time.
