It’s official, autumn has begun, and with it the colder months are just beginning. This means waving goodbye to the sunshine but saying hello to transitional staples you need to layer up in for autumn.

Autumn layering isn’t just for your knitwear, this jewellery trend is following suit. Jewellery stacking, or layering, is set to be one of the biggest fashion trends this season, according to new Pinterest data analysed by jewellery brand PRYA

With a +4.8x surge in searches for “necklace stack”, the style is quickly gaining momentum, along with increases in search terms for “charm necklace” (+4.5%)“ring stack” (+3.8%) and “earring stack” (+2.7%)

Jewellery stacking is the art of layering multiple pieces of jewellery next to each other, to create a unique look.

“The days of subtle, dainty jewellery inspired by the old-money trend are over and edgy maximalism has taken place,” says Arwa Hassan, in-house style director at PRYA. “Jewellery stacking, or layering, is the perfect way to breathe new life into your jewellery collection. While it might sound simple, there’s an artform to layering jewellery.”

Necklace Stacking

Ready to create your own stack? Here’s what jewellery experts at PRYA recommend.

Necklaces

Start with a simple gold or silver chain as a base layer, then build from there. There are lots of fun necklaces to add to your base layer, it just depends on what look you want to achieve. The key to nailing the stacked look lies in mixing necklaces of varying lengths, ensuring that each piece complements the others to create that effortlessly layered effect.

A combination of dainty chains, chunkier pieces and a name necklace can create a uniquely dynamic look. A top tip is to choose necklaces that complement the neckline of your clothing, longer necklaces pair well with v-neck or scoop neck tops, while shorter necklaces suit high necklines.

Rings

When stacking rings, start with a bold statement piece as the focal point and build around it. For a relaxed, asymmetrical vibe, try adding midi rings or spacing across different fingers. Thin, simple bands can act as spacers, ensuring each ring has its own moment to shine.

Varying band widths add contrast, while incorporating textured rings alongside smooth bands gives depth to your stack. Adding meaningful pieces, such as birthstones or initials, personalises your stack further. Maintaining balance and comfort ensures a chic yet wearable style without overcrowding your fingers.

Earrings

Start with a hoop or drop earrings, with the largest in your first earlobe piercing, then experiment from there. Mix and match different styles, such as combining classic studs with small hoops or a sleek ear cuff for a minimalist yet stylish look.

Play with proportions by mixing dainty pieces with bold, statement earrings to create a balanced and eye-catching stack. Ear cuffs can be added to enhance the stack without requiring additional piercings.

Bracelets

Start by choosing a standout piece, like a chunky cuff or a delicate bangle, and layer thinner, complementary bracelets around it.

Bangles can be worn solo or stacked, with the option to experiment with placement on the wrist, forearm, or even bicep for a truly unique look.

Arwa said, “The surge in searches for charm necklaces, which saw a +4.5% increase, highlights the growing trend towards personalised jewellery. Customised pieces are becoming increasingly popular as fashion lovers seek to express their individuality through meaningful accessories, from engraved initials and birthstones to symbolic charms. The jewellery stacking trend is a great way to experiment with your own personal style, creating a look that is uniquely yours.

Necklace Stacking

“As we head into the cosy season of autumn and winter, layering your clothes is a staple and jewellery stacking can elevate your look even further. Layering necklaces on a chunky knit is a great way to start. Instead of wearing just one prominent chunky necklace, layer a few of different lengths, styles, and colours – this will create a more laid-back and off-duty aesthetic.

“For a night out this season, add a sparkling tennis necklace with cubic zirconia with your base chain. For a romantic date night, add a timeless heart pendant to your stack. For a bold look, try pairing a pearl choker with playful charms, or opt for a mixed metal necklace with chunky hardware. There are no rules when it comes to stacking, so embrace the season and experiment with your look.”
