WARNING: Reading on Holiday can be Damaging to your Eyes!

Reading on Holiday

As summer temperatures soar, there’s nothing quite like getting lost in a good book. Whether you’re lounging by the pool, relaxing at the beach, or enjoying a quiet moment in your backyard, summer is an ideal time for reading. Mubin Ahmed from Awesome Books is warning people that reading in the heat requires some precautions to ensure both your comfort and safety. Here are some essential tips to make your summer reading experience enjoyable and safe from Awesome Books.

Choose the Right Location

Selecting a shady and breezy spot can make a world of difference when reading in the heat. A shaded area will protect you from direct sunlight, which can cause sunburn and heatstroke. Consider setting up under a large umbrella, a tree, or a canopy.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is a common risk during hot weather. Make sure to drink plenty of water while you read. Bring a bottle of water with you and take regular sips. Avoid beverages that can dehydrate you, such as alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

Wear Sun Protection

Even if you’re sitting in the shade, it’s important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin, and reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can also provide extra protection.

Take Breaks

Prolonged exposure to heat can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Make sure to take regular breaks to cool down. Stand up, stretch, and move to a cooler location if you start feeling too warm. Pay attention to your body and be aware of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache, and excessive sweating.

Plan Your Reading Time

The sun is strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM. If possible, schedule your reading sessions for the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the peak heat. Not only will this be more comfortable, but it will also reduce your risk of sunburn and overheating.

Protect Your Eyes

Bright sunlight can strain your eyes. Sunglasses with UV protection can help reduce glare and protect your eyes from harmful rays. Alternatively, reading under a shaded area or using an e-reader with an adjustable backlight can help minimise eye strain.

Dress Comfortably

Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. This will help keep you cool by allowing your skin to breathe and sweat to evaporate. Avoid dark colours, as they absorb more heat.

Bring a Portable Fan

A small, battery-operated fan can provide a refreshing breeze and help keep you cool while you read. Some fans come with a misting feature, which can be particularly effective in cooling you down.

Monitor the Weather

Keep an eye on the weather forecast, especially if you’re planning to spend a long time outside reading. Be aware of heat advisories and warnings in your area. On extremely hot days, it might be best to stay indoors with air conditioning or a fan.
