If you’re partial to splurging on a few pieces of luxury jewellery, it’s only natural that you might want to take them abroad with you, especially after a string of staycations over the past few years

However, as much fun as showing off your new jewellery is, it also comes with a certain degree of risk. If you’re not careful, luxury jewellery can get damaged, lost or – worst of all – stolen while travelling.

Each year, it’s estimated that there are around three million theft offences recorded in the UK, and things aren’t much better abroad. To help you to safeguard your jewellery while you’re exploring other countries, we’ve put together some top tips below.

Consider taking out insurance

One of the most important things that you can do to protect yourself is to look into insurance cover. If you take out watch or jewellery insurance, you could have a better chance of being protected should anything go awry.

Be street smart

Sometimes, it pays to be tactical with your luxury jewellery. To ensure that you don’t become just another statistic, it’s important to be sensible.

To start with, make sure to take clear photos of your jewellery so that you have a record of what you’ve packed. These pictures can also be used if you need to file a police report.

You should also keep your jewellery close by at all times. For example, packing luxury jewellery into the hold is a recipe for disaster. Instead, keep your valuables in your hand luggage during the flight.

If you can, discreetly wear as much jewellery as possible while you travel. That way, you’ll notice if someone tries to take it from you! However, this does run the risk of damaging it in transit.

Don’t leave items in your hotel room

Leaving expensive jewellery loose in your hotel room is asking for trouble. To keep your prized possessions unharmed, make sure that your room has a safe. Whenever you leave, be sure to lock away your jewellery along with any other valuables like passports, cash and tablets.

If you don’t have a safe where you’re staying, try to keep as much on you as you can. That could be by inconspicuously wearing it or tucking it away in a handbag that you’ll carry with you at all times.

If neither of those options are suitable, it might be best to purchase some costume jewellery to take with you – leaving your precious items at home.

Now all that’s left to do is pack your bags and head to the airport for a trip of a lifetime.
